Rattling *tiak tiak tiak* sound from right side of dashboard
« on: April 04, 2010, 10:11:51 PM »
Sometimes, I can hear rattling sound coming from the right side of the dashboard. This happens at D mode when the vehicle is stationary. When i switch to N, R or P when stationary, the sound disappears. When I move off, the sound disappears as well.

At first I thought the sound is caused by the vibration of my keys, belongings in my car, loose screw in the bonnet etc. But i checked myself and found nothing.

Any fellow bros and sis have similar experience? My 4AT sedan is 3.3 years old.  :(

check your door pockets. the last time i heard this, i spent nearly a month wondering what was it. even the SA also dunno what happened.

out of despair, i took out everything in the car, and found out that it was the ratting sound of the CDs in my door pockets. -_-

my few months old had similar sound before, car rattles even when driving over slightly uneven grounds.
went back to TCM twice (left it there for 2 days on 2nd time) and was their engineers insulated the gaps between dashboard and side panel pieces; can see some "tape" thingy at the gaps of centre piece when look really close enough. was told sound was due to upholstery parts rubbing against each other when car "shakes". problem solved... for now.

try insulating the parts u think might be the cause

same as mine...had noise since 1st day...took almost 2yrs & many trips to TCM before rectify it but not 100%.....latio dashboard have a design problem...they come in a few pieces rather than a whole piece....but downside is that replacement of each piece is possible & cheaper....just ordered from TCM the top center console with the a/c vents for $65.70 exclude GST....some clips broke and it is not sitting firmly now.....dun know who broke it but I did sent back to TCM to complain abt noise from the same spot prior to me discovering the clips broke....

Hmm.. But the funny thing is the sound came only when I engage D when stationary. If I switch to other modes I.e. N, R, P the sound disappear immediately. The rpm of all these modes stay the same. I seem to b inclined that the sound came from the engine.

I hope it isn't caused by my recent switch of engine oil to 5w50. Think I shall bring it to my workshop to check. Thanks for all the advice

if vibration is from engine, chances are sound will be there regardless of gear position.
from your description, there's no sound when gearbox is disengaged (i.e. at N, P) but sound appears when gearbox is engaged (i.e. at D). vibrations may be caused by the engaged clutch when car is at "forced" stationary; notice that car moves forward when you release the brakes at idling (level ground). these vibrations might be the culprit. but why no sound at R, no clue liow.

btw, my mech advised me use N gear whenever i stop, suggesting that this may preserve the clutch and also the brakes which otherwise need to be working to keep car stationary... how true i'll probably check with TCM during my next servicing.

as i understand, frequent changing of gear from D to N during traffic light stop will lead to premature wear & tear of gearbox....it is advisable to keep at D for traffic light stop.....

gearbox more ex than brakes.....anyway to each his own....for me I always keep in D at traffic light stop....my latio coming 5yrs or 120K km.......most ex repair was change of a/c compressor...the rest are wear & tear items....

Yup, your gearbox will wear off if you keep changing from D to N. Not advisable to change to N everytime you stop at any traffic light. I would rather change my brake pad than gear box . haa
