CVT Gearbox Problem
kieranc3:
I have a second hand 2005 Latio whose gearbox is already spoilt. As detailed by some forummers, the reverse gear is unable to engage. The only way is to tap the accelerator which inevitably results in a big jerking movement when it is engaged. There has been a few occasions when I totally cannot engage the reverse gear (especially when the engine is cold) and have to put back to "D" and drive straight on.
I understand that this requires a CVT gearbox overhaul/repair. The cheapest I have found costs 1.7K. The problem is that I am unwilling to spend that money because the car has only 8 months left. I recently called up a Tan Chong mechanic and learnt that refreshing the CVT fluid does not help. They have tried it before. He told me that for those that with AT gearbox problem, some have been able to add a transmission fluid additive which helped solve their gearbox sound and smoothness in engaging gears problem. However, he is not aware of any products for CVT gearbox and asks me to search the internet.
I have found that Afton Chemical has such a product.

Has anybody tried it before? I have no idea where to get it or the costs. Anyway to help prolong the life of my gearbox will be helpful.

I have called up Afton and their fluid is meant as an additive to manufacturers of CVT fluid. So, it is no go here.
Anybody has tips on how I can prolong the life of my CVT gearbox? I was told never to floor the accelerator. (Ouch...I have doing that all along.)

Think is to change early...
I do my current at 60K....
My previous ride WISH 4T at 40K(self service)...no problem for 7yrs..
Enzoni:
My CVT started to have funny sound some time back, Kelvin also noticed during last servicing.
Recently drove to Malacca, cleared some carbon on NSH, now no more sound.
Think need to 'exercise' the gearbox once in a while to keep it 'fit' on top of changing CVT oil regularly.
But i think cannot engage reverse gear is abit too serious... dun think adding additives alone will help

Hi there,
What's NSH referring too?
