I have read that the rubber will hardened if exposed to UV, heat and water, usually this apply to used tyres. But for brand new that are properly sealed can last for quite some time but nobody dare to commit the lifespan.

You can still drive with your stock toyo tyre for more than 3 yrs for 47,000km already, so dun tell me if the same manufactured date that is sealed cannot be use ? Logic ? Maybe the tyre shop will sell at a discount for long storage for new tyres ? And I have not heard of expiry date for tyres.

Anyway it a good practice to check your tyres regularly.  ;)

There is actually a greater possibility for new tyres in storage to deteriorate faster as the rubber is not "flexed", ie. not being rotated, as fitted on a car and being driven.

Even your pencil eraser will harden if not used over a prolonged period.

That is also how a new tyre fitted to a car can get flat spot if the owner travels overseas frequently, seldom uses his car and the parked car's tyres are left to carry the weight of the car on just one spot.

Unless the sealed tyres are stored in a temperature and humidity controlled environment, there is a even higher possibility of mid dew and mould and fungus building up on the tyres, beneath the warmth of the wrappers.

Hi,
You are telling us a brand new tyre will "deteriorate" faster than a used tyre ?

Your eraser analogy is based on new or used, if used I agreed to a certain extend but if new sealed with plastic under room temperature then I dare to challenge you with my >20 yrs old Stabilo rubber with me, the elasticity is still strong.

Do you know exactly what is a flat spot ? Pls refer to this http://www.bikewebsite.com/bikeof.htm. So pls do us a favour, you will not happy if I tell you BS or mis-leading info again, you know where you stand. Peace.

Hi jazz, for me, I don't have any fact of how long the tyre quality will deteriorate but ever change my spare tyre of age > 14yrs (i guessed) which is never been used before as it's still look brand new. Once you look at the tyre, the colour look very funny (eg..look like very shining with really dark black which doesn't look like normal tyre and really you can feel that it's have became harden). Again, been advise by my cousin in law who owned the tyre shop is Malaysia, it's not advisable for long distance travel, even though talking abt >30km and that why after replacing the worn out tyre (with minimum thread left), i changed the spare tyre with the used tyre which at least still can allow me to travel for 100 ~200km (i guess)... :D

Hi LatioR,
You bought a second hand car which is 14 yrs old or you really owned a car for 14 yrs ?

I have searched the web and found no one dare to commit or estimate the lifespan of a tyre. I agree on your spare tyre explanation coz the tyre is not sealed and is exposed to heat therefore it will definitely harden. But how many of us will bother to change our spare tyre ?

Hi Jazz, no lah, i bought the used car, toyota corolla 1.6M (abt ~2.5yrs ago) which is still look good and do not wish to pay installment for too long (=> used car is better option then). The FC for a start still can hit ~11km/l but at the time I sold it, the FC is abt 8.5km/l liao and decided to change to Latio (instead of Altis) and in turn, can save me abt $150 ~ $200/mth or $1.8k to $2k per annual.. :yehyeh:
