I think it is better to make an appointment so that you do not have to wait for so long.

hi clarence,

thanks for your point. appreciated late. sorry for late reply.

I also have this noise, thought is the steering coupling. sian.

Hi Jazz

I think too common already. Mine just happened recently. I didn't notice in the past 1yr.

I also have the same problem as Gui Ge.  Cable within the steering wheel loose.  Went TCM to have it rectified.  But I think yours may be considered "normal" by TCM.  The reason for saying that is that when I brought my car to TCM on the steering wheel noise, the noise sounds like rubbing sound.  I could hear the sound even if I turn the steering slowly, such as going up or coming down MSCP.  During the testing by TCM technician, he identified the problem within minutes.  However, he highlighted to me that the motor sound is normal if we were to turn the steering fast, which he demonstrated by turning the steering to the limit (i.e. more than your 200-250 degrees).  Since you hear the sound only if you turn the steering fast, then TCM will say it is normal.  Took them quite long.  Appointment time at 9.30 am and ready for collection only at 2 pm.  They said quite complicated because they have to dismantle parts (-- may be smoke me only).  Do share with us if TCM tells you the same thing.  Thanks.

Hi HumbleCar

Did they really smoke u? Terrible.... I think sthing what ppl say are bs oni.

Btw, if we hear there is a little "tick" sound when turning the steering, i think that is consider the real "normal" kua.

Regards.
sorry, i must agree because i don't know how to disagree. agreeeee only....

Hi iagree,  it is not the 'tick' sound.  It is motor sound.  Very obvious one.  Dunno he smoke me or not leh.  But he did demonstrate by turning steering fast and can hear the motor sound.  The "tick" sound can hear only if I sign then turn.  When we turn at MSCP (either going up or down), we don't signal.  So no sound.

Hi HumbleCar

Motor sound? Not too sure how it sounded.

When you on your signal, and then you turn your steering at certain degree, there surely a tick sound (i thk that tick sound is to tell the steering to OFF the signal when you turn the steering to the other direction. e.g. you wanna to turn left, u on your left signal, then you turn ur steering anti-clock wise at certain degree it will hv a tick sound. after that when you turn close-wise, the signal will be off.)

Not sure...

Look under your car. Do you see any power steering fluid leakage.

I would advise you to send your car to Tan Chong for a free diagnosis since it is under warranty.

I don't think its possible to see power steering fluid leakage. Simply because...the Latio does not use any power steering fluid. It uses a motor.

so hehe, i can only imagine that bro bending to look under his car after reading your advice. keke

Carmodz,

Do you know if Latio uses electric or hyraulic power steering?

Latio uses electric power steering.  Quite common for newer cars.  Less power loss to engine, better fuel efficient and maintenance free.

so what is the tick sound actually? i never had this problem till recently so shouldnt be normal. it only occurs when the signal light is on and i'm turning in the direction of my signal.

Yes, electric power steering! EPS
The motor of EPS is located at the steering column assembly.

Better get the wheel align.  I kenna before for wheel misalignment and did not pass inspection.  So got to pay to have it align and then pay again for a second inspection (though it is a little cheaper than the first inspection fee), not to mention the trouble of having to go to VICOM to queue up for a second time.

Regarding the sound, my case was the cable loose and the sound can be heard even if turn steering slowly.  If I turn fast, it is the motor sound which is normal (according to TCM guys).

hi Humblecar, which VICOM u went 4 inspection? So niao one ah! Must inform all to ban from going there! Look like they want to get more $$$..

Sorry to dig up such an old thread.

Anyone know if Autosavers can replace the steering coupling thingy? Any idea how much it cost?
Since my latio is coming 4years old, dont think I will be going back to TCM.

Thanks

Why don't you give any of the TCM workshop a call to see whether they can do for you on good will basis? I changed mine yesterday at TCM, Bukit Timah during my 20K servicing.

U r so wrong. Car alignment even on daily driving might need to periodically check and might be off as well.

And this is a requirement under road safety act aka traffic rules which all inspection centre will check.
