I have used my petrol driven car to jump start a diesel Eurovan before, with success.

I am surprised that AA guy gave you such an answer.

He needs to attend a refresher course.  ;D

I did try to jumpstart a van using my car...and it didn't work. When I asked why, the AA guy told me different voltage between petrol and diesel vehicle.

hmm....

Diesel vehicle not using 12V battery meh ? Interesting.

clarence:
I can't recall the voltage in diesel vehicle's battery, but diesel vehicles use higher voltage than petrol vehicles as they run on high compression and consume more battery power.

Diesel vehicles also do not use any spark plugs,

They have glow plugs to start the engine.

david1881:
Diesel vehicles (pick up, van, eurovan, taxi) also uses same voltage as car, 12V.
But heavy goods vehicles (truck, trailer, sbs/smrt buses...) using 24V.
