What is an over drive found in our latio?
« on: March 28, 2009, 07:11:42 AM »
Hi all latios,

Any kind soul care to enlighten what is the function of the overdrive found in our latio? Can it increase our performance? For regular driving, should I turn it on or off?

I did hear from the SE that it has something to do with when overtaking when I take the car few months back ... but whether it should be on or off... i have totally forget already... forgot to write it down that time...

Please share ur tots.

thank you.

newbie.

Overdrive is something like 4th gear on a 4AT. Always keep it on or else you will be travelling 80km/h at 3000rpm.

Overdrive is ON by default when you start your engine. If you push the button, the O/D OFF light will light up, indicating that you have turned it OFF. So only push the button if you wanna off it and overtake or something. Although, I just step on the accelerator harder, the effect is the same. I only turn it off when using engine braking.

Yes, the ON/OFF thing is confusing I know!

in simple way, is

Indicator light up = OD is Off
Indicator light off = OD is ON

When u off the OD, it is akin to dropping one gear for e.g. from 5th gear to 4th gear in a manual car. Usually is for short burst of power needed for overtaking or something, but i dun really use it because when i OFF the OD, my RPM goes up and engine very noisy and scary.

Correct. Just leave it on bah. If you need more power, step harder. The TCU will auto drop gear to give you more power.

by turning OD off, you're asking the car to engine brake ONLY if you don't zua accelerator.
Cos theres only 2 ways of engine breaking. One is to OFF OD, and one is to whack the gear into 2 or L. these are low gears.

So if u wanna play with other cars but without compromising ur speed and acceleration, just turn OD off and whack. OD off will make ur car engine break but give u more oomph WITHOUT using ur REAL brakes.

Hmm I'm not sure for CVT, but this is from my experience on my 4AT.

Engine brake can happen at any gear, including Overdrive. On final gear(OD), engine brake happens at any speed above 55km/h. Try it! Release the accelerator and you will feel a drag on your car, and your speed drops very fast. After that, accelerate to the same speed, and try it this time, but in Neutral. You can feel the difference with and without engine brake.

The thing is, below 55km/h, engine brake will stop, and your car will freeroll(you can actually feel the drag go away, like a push). This isn't good when you're going to stop, you'll want engine brake to the last moment, as you consume ZERO fuel when you are engine braking. Its a feature found in modern cars.

So, as I slow down to a stop, I turn off OD at around 60km/h, bring my RPM up to enable engine brake on 3rd gear, than shift to 2 at around 40km/h. It saves you fuel, and it reduces wear on your brakes. Downside is, people say frequent shifting of gears is not good.

Just one of the way I achieve my above average FC.  ;D

huh?? i was told by my SA to keep it off at all times unless when i overtaking for tt sudden burst of power needed. when u on it...u will see your rpm sudden jump to 5-6. my SA said using that frequently is a waste of fuel which defeat the purpose of good consumption of latio.

for me, after some tests, i feel tt i rather press my accelerator harder than to on the sports mode which eat up alot of fuel.

Sports mode is different from OD off button.

Sport mode is found on CVT, ODoff is found on 4AT. What you say in the first paragraph is correct, that is for sports mode, on CVT.

On 4AT , turn off OD is push the button and orange light comes on.

so can anyone enlighten me like wat speed n wat rev then OD work ? for me, sometime i on it no diff, sometime it add another 1.5k - 2k of rpm. but close it then can tua to 6k, else stop at 5k. quite confusing actually. sometime i wan power n i off it dun see rev gain. from wat i know its actually the rev for that speed, like if its running 80km/h @ 2k is saving petrol so u off it, it will go to mayb 3k. anyone know from wat speed and wat rev then it work? so next time i noe its useful then off it, else off liao bo diff like dumb. hahax.

Actually, OD is like 4th gear on a 4AT. So turning off OD is something like shifting down on manual. Eventually you have to shift up of course, after you max out the speed for that gear.

For me, if I need power I just press accelerator harder, and the TCU will automatically downshift for me. Don't need to be so mafan, push button. I think on steep slopes down you can turn off OD also, to give more engine braking.

Again I stress, OD is only on 4AT. For CVT its sports mode, and its different.
