Help on GPS recommandation...

Dunno issit me or the upgrading of SG road.. I have becoming more of a Road 'idiot' when trying to go to a 'new' place in SG...... 

CHeck any bro or sis can intro any user friendly GPS system. to me anot...

Bro, navigational skills is either you use it or you'll loose it. The more you practise, the better your sense of direction and if you don't use it often, you'll find it harder to gauge which direction you're going.

That is a huge GPS. Do you still leave it on the dashboard when you step off the car?

Actually it's not that huge since I drive a SUV... Doesn't look too out of place. I usu leave it in at my workplace and home... Other places, I remove it...

Ya... what you say is true.. with more & more road changes & additional routes in SG.. which i seldom travel.. it's a killer for me....
Coz currently for me is home to work & back to home mostly... That's why can't practice...

Can consider looking at the GPS models available during the upcoming IT Show (12th - 15th March). Usually have quite good deals during these shows.

When I was looking at GPS, the main things I had in mind were:
1. How to update maps and preferably free. Your GPS is as good as your latest updated maps.

2. Ease of use. Some maps may not have postal code search so please select and try the GPS models you are considering. The postal code search is mostly map dependant.

3. Ease of use II. Impt thing is how long it takes your GPS to search for a location. No point sitting in the car and wait 10 mins while your set searches for your next destination.

P/S: I'm currently using a Nuvi 5000, mainly for the AV input which I've connected to a reverse camera. Don't like too many screens on my dashboard. Only draw-back is that it's meant for vehicle use, no internal battery

just went to Audio Hse yesterday .>> got some sale on old gps model...50%  but most of the discounted model are EXTERNAL antenna based..., so i never buy..

But now i think the value for $$$ GPS shld be Holux 61 and Shinco GM4300 (it suits my budget of $400 and 4.3")

Both sets specs are quite similiar with only exceptional is that 61 dont have bluetooth, 4300 got. BUT 61 is slimer as compared to 4300 (abt slimer by half)

The only bad thing is that the Holux 61 and GM4300 is old technology one  24 channel statelite tihngy.

GM4380 and Holux 62 are the latest one with 32 channels but are slight above $400

Recently i heard that Marbella GPS are good too... but i never heard of it b4.. anyone got information???

check how good/fast is the reception/map update, you dont want to reach a junction before the navigator arrow head.

check the routing function, some always asked you to take highway  (eg. in Malaysia) pay toll to reach your destination. You will never learn the free short cut.

Hi Bro Ying, do u hv experience traveling for Free to north (eg. to Penang) that say from Melacca. Hv tried up to Seremban and yet to try going up furhter (in fact, from Ipoh to Penang, should be Ok for me). Thinking of going north during mass vacation this month ends. Thanks.

drove from Penang to Melaka, some segment use old because that segment of old road is right next to highway and not much traffic light, not much speeding cars also. Cant remember which exit, should be between Ipoh and KL. KL to Melaka can take "scenic route" via Sepang, PD, Aloh Gajah if you have the time and mood. Can stop by some beach and air panas too. If you are thinking of reaching Penang in one day then forget about using old road from KL to Melaka.

using a holux 62 now and rather pleased with the performance. since have been using mapking all the way.

How go will it take to install? Cos now my GPS wire still dangling from the lighter hole..

need to check road map for old route to north, should have some caostal road but it will be away from NSWH. those old road I used are right next to NSHW.  I wish I have the time to drive north via old road again, then can stop by nice places along the way, eat eat see see...

Hi Bro, without GPS and just with old M'sia map (dated yr 2006), managed to drive all the way from SG to Tengganu and stop at nice sea side for one night and managed to find my way to Penang via Kalantan main road and along the mountain raod (thru Grik) on 2nd day. Thought got HW but in fact there wasn't any HW and it took me abt 7hrs+ to reach Penang (along the way also get into heavy rain and small flood on road side). Nice scenary though on the mountain top. Total distance travelled @ > 1,100km+.

:) Yeh that's the "highway", a lot of bend and slope when you cross Titiwangsa. With sun rise or sun set the scenary can be unforgetable. flood and landslide is the things to watch out especially during monsoon. how the FC?

currently using Garmin 360 which is an old model with text to speech for street names and bluetooth to phone.  bought from Amazon and shipped via vpost last year.  total cost around S$350.

the screen is not as good as current models.  but satellite locking is fast.  the only complain i have is that we arroaching a turn, I have to look at the screen to confirm the turn.  because the screen update is slow by 1 second i think.  when i'm quite near to the turn already, the screen still shows a bit distance from the turn.  maybe the screen automatically zoom in when approaching the turn.  it seems the distance is longer on the screen.  so i missed a few turns because of this.  now I learned to count the number of junctions on the screen before that turn.

also the distance to next turn is shown on the screen, but the direction of the turn (left or right turn) is not shown on the main screen.  the direction is only shown on the map so it you still a bit far from the turn, you will not know to keep left or right unless you are near the turn and the map shows the arrow.

maybe the newer model has a better user interface.

Is the Nuvi 205 a newer version than 360? Cos I am using 205 now and I dun have the problem tat u described here...
