Strange noise at around 90km/h
« on: May 27, 2009, 02:20:36 PM »
Hi guys,

I have noticed that my car emit a strange noise whenever the speed reaches around 90km/h. Its hard to describe the noise and it sounds something like a mosquito flying past your ear. This noise is not heard when below 90km/h or when speed exceed 100km/h.

Not sure why my car will have this irritating noise, but i suspect its the tyres. Can anybody enlighten me please? Thanks

I noticed this too, I think its coming from engine bay. Not sure exactly what it is.  :confused1:

ok, seems like I am not the only one with this problem.

hmmm, if its coming from the engine, one possible way to find out is to change to neutral when the car is travelling around 90km/h. I think when doing this the strange noise disappear, then probably its coming from the engine. But if the noise persist, then maybe its not from the engine.

I shall try that. But I heard CVT cannot go N when moving, or it will damage the transmission. Is it true? I'm on a 4AT so I'm ok.

I tried lifting off accelerator at 100km/h, the whirring noise still there. Same as when I put to N at 100km/h. Guess is maybe tire or wheels or transmission.

Yeah, the noise always comes in when I reach about 90km/h, regardless of whether I press or lift off the accelerator. Once drop below 90 or rise near 100, the noise fades away.

Base on yours and my experience:
1) The noise only comes about when we reach a certain speed.
2) Once reach that certain speed, regardless of change to N or release the accelerator, the noise would still be there.

My hunch is that maybe it has got something to do with the wheels or tyres. I think I will consult the tyre shop man soon.  ;D

the best way to check is to send ur car to a workshop, lift up the car on the servicin bay and do a stationary run on all 4 wheels to rectify the sound.

we cannot do stationary 4 wheel run cos we are FWD...but it should from the front since it's clearly heard.
30% on ride, 70% on driver....
-=License to SPEED=-

-Front 2 pot brakes, rear single pot
-Customise Coilover
-Full UR brace

Affirmative, its from the front. Will send it in and see what they say, since my 50K servicing is also up.
