Title: Car feels wobbly at higher speeds
Post by: galoe on February 16, 2010, 09:16:37 PM
Hi folks

Happy CNY to all.

Got a question, my new ride FL latio 4A, tends to have a floating feel above 105km/h while I was driving along our NS highway.
Am on std sports rims/tyres 15" provided by TC. Fully stock.

Anyone experienced something like that?  Could it be due to the stock tyres?

maybe wheel balancing or wheel alignment is out. 105km/h should be very stable. can do it at tyre shop while you still in malaysia for a cheaper price.

It all boils down to expectations.

Jap cars tend to have a floating feeling at high speeds due to its light kerb weight but the advantage is fuel economy.

My suggestion to you is to change your current tyres to Yokohama DB series tryes. I had faced the same problem previously but by changing tryes cannot totally cure the problem. Because of it, I installed strut-bars, coilover and upgrade my rims for stability. I'm now happily driving my car. My common speed on expressway is about 120km/h .

I would think that it could be the tyres... the stock tyres are really bad... when i do cornering at mid speed and wet weather, I have the feeling of the tyres slipping from the road surface.

At high speed (more than 100) the car floats as the TS mentioned. My old Sunny (i tink also use the same brand and model) aqua-plane a few times liao.

But all these disappear when I changed the tires to hankook ones. Must thank Carmodz for helping make the decision.  :yehyeh:

Not sure if adding strut bars, lower arms bar, and anti-roll bar helps... as the bars (except front strut bar) came a few days after i change my tires

The reason I suggested Yokohama DB Series is because it's a comfort tyre (silent type) so it will not be noisy if you are travelling on high speed (100-150km/h) and most important is that it won't be slippery when it comes rainy season.

I'm not a technician, too bad I had upgraded to 17" rim with Bridgestone tyres (performance type). Really miss my DB series..... :(

Float or wobbly?? Very different thing...

Wobbly at high speed. Go and re balance your wheel at high speed.. Had that experience before..

Float.. Sorry ccan't help.. Lower your expectation, or add more weight to your car.

Latio is only 1110kg, so it is normal for that floaty feel at high speed, but its economical.

Or would you prefer a fuel guzzling Kia Cerato Forte 1.6 tipping the scales at 1330kg?

I just like to add that if you experience wobbly feeling driving at high speed on a say very open area NS highway, chances are that you could be encountering wind drafts, thats why they installed wind socks on some stretch of the NSHW.

you don't have to go far to experience that, even in SG, especially recent weather has got sudden gusts of wind, travelling at 90Km/h along TPE or changi coast roads during early evenings, u could feel the wind pushing your car so badly that U need to adjust your steering wheels to correct the car heading.

So keeping to your speed limit is important on open areas of the NSHW, a strong gust of wind can make a lane filtering potential hazard

"feels wobbly" and "floating feel" - could you describe what you felt?

I have tried running 150 km/h on NSH with 205/50/16 with a front strut bar. Was told that lower arms bar and anti-roll bar doesn't help much on Latio.

If you feel wobbly, like what the guys mentioned is good to do a wheel balancing.

On speed higher than 100 km/h, look out for crosswind. Look out for wind socks on some stretches of the NSHW. When the wind socks are tilted more than 90 degrees, be careful and slow down.
