hi bro,the proper way is to step on the foot brake, activate ur parking brake(hand brake) then u select ur gear to 'P' position.by doing this u will not damaged ur safety device inside the gearbox.cos if u don't activate ur parking first,ur car will rolled back or forward, there will be a force acting on the safety device, sometimes u will have problem selecting ur lever from 'P' to 'D'.

Always shift to P before engage foot brake. No wonder morning sometimes difficult to engage from P to D liao. :crying:

This apply to normal parking too? or only at slope?
So the proper way should be:-
After go into a parking lot, step on the foot brake. then shift to "P" position.
-
to be frank, for my coming to 6 years old latio, i always put to P, then step on footbrake.

same same for my 7yrs latio

Kelvin, i think latio do not have hand brake, only foot brake = hand brake.
I think what you mean is to depress our normal brake before shifting gear is it?
NO bro,it's applied ur parking brake(hand brake for some cars) then u put ur gear lever to 'P'.

yes, correct, that is what i mean. For some cars is handbrake.
-
Normally do not use foot brake unless on slope,
Jus put to P on flat ground

Correct, what I meant is all along I have been doing is shift to P before depress foot brake, that explain why sometimes morning I having difficulties in engaging from P to D. That why I sheeesh after reading your explanation.
Hope I did not confuse fellow forumers here.

Hey Kelvin,
Me same as Jazz, it is difficult to change from P to D when I used the opposite way.
Sometimes used quite a bit of force to change P to D...
Until now then I saw your correct method.
What I wish to ask is, have I damaged the gearbox or the safety device? :confused1:
Can the safety device alone be changed if it really spoils, or must change whole gb?

You are scaring me. :crying:

Hahaha, got question so must ask ma...

I have tried the method advise by Kelvin.
That is, step on the foot brake, while stepping on the foot brake, engage the parking braking, then engage the P gear.
I think a lot of us need some time to change to this method.
Really can't get use to it.
Normally, we will engage the reverse gear to reverse into the parking lot.
Then we will conveniently engage the P gear and then step on the parking brake.
It will take some time to change the momentum
Hahaha

I tell you a better method which I've been using for over 4yrs without a prob and this will ensure that you can shift from P to D easily (no stress on the GB):
1. From D or R, change to N (brakes on -- not your handbrake/footbrake)
2. Turn off engine (brakes on -- not your handbrake/footbrake)
3. From N to P (brakes on -- not your handbrake/footbrake)
4. Step on footbrake and release your brakes
The rationale is that the engine while still on will cause the car to move slightly when you shift to P and that will cause unnecessary stress on the GB. Try it.
-
Wah din knw dat engagin hand/foot parkin brake still got so many theory in doin it ah.
Tink its better to protect our gb & all other aspects of maintainin our ride, given è sky high Coe prices of car. Not like last time suka suka change car as & when we feel like.
Even preowned cars r priced very high now.

When u feel resistance shifting frm P to D realease the foot brakes n brakes let it roll a little either back or forth then engage brake padel to shift gear, works most of time. But sometimes still kena ni choice got to force, which i hate it
Gd practice is shift to N then P will prevent that situation most of time. If D straight to P esp on a slopes u will feel resistence, allow the rolling a little, u wun crash.

For the past week plus, follow your method and work quite well.
1) After reverse parking ( normally ), shift from R back to N while stepping on brake.
2) Let the car settle abit, it may roll abit depending on the flatness of the floor or tarmac.
3) Shift to P from N while still stepping on brake
4) Then engage foot / hand brake before releasing brake
5) Lastly off engine.
Morning or after work start car, can engage to D smoothly. :yehyeh:

This won't work on slopes (parking on slopes) but my method is good for all parking conditions.

Then continue on your method then. :devil2:
I for one definitely will not off my engine to shift my gears. :nonod:
