Title: Metal sound when accelerating
Post by: lhhao on August 04, 2012, 06:21:28 PM
Hi everyone,

Any one facing the same situation as me? Everytime when i press on the accelerator when moving off from stationary or at low speed, there will be this metal sound coming out which last for 1 to 2 sec. Anyone can advice? :confused1:

If you drive from station to 30km/hr and hear this sound for 1/2 sec, then it is the ABS checking sound.  You only notice this after few years of driving.

The sound is like metal "rattling" sound. And it happens when i press the accelerator at low speed.

ABS checking sound will be heard whenever u off the ignition and then start the engine again, the first move off to 30km/hr.Many of the forum members came to me regarding this issue.

Anyway, is pinging of engine bad for the engine?
Title: Re: Metal sound when accelerating
Post by: d.titan on August 05, 2012, 08:10:26 AM
yes engine ping is bad
hv tried to find what causes it,
duno understand the explaination.

think it started abt 2yrs
when the car was abt 4yrs old

It also help with the octane booster,
but more $
so i just stick with caltex 98

they hv the little people cleaning up yr engine....
in their advert.....

cheers

Engine ping can be resolve by tuning, it cause by bad ratio mixture of fuel and air which indirectly incur bad combustion. Higher octane petrol may ease to smoothen the combustion due to addictive added but it doesn't aid in solving the root cause.  ;)

Hi jazz, can give an idea how much would it cost to tune the car?
Titan, 98 really helps to minimise the sound. But i still can hear it at times.

I also hv this sound when going upslope in the multi-storey carpark. My case was due to the alum. shield for the exshaust pipe. I asked the mechanic to adjust the plate and it minminize the sound.

i always hear this metal coming from the left of the car when seated in the driver seat when i start and move off.. one metal knock at 10kmph then 5metal knocking sounds when at 30kmph... its been bugging me... so its the ABS testing sound???

as for the rattling when accelerating and can be heard clearly in multi storey when your car is surrounded by walls, i had that before also...

confirm its engine knocking due low octane fuel used. try higher octane fuel.... really remove the knocking.

Hi,

I also encountered the same problem, went down to kelvin's workshop to check.
Was told is common among lation.... Try higher octane fuel, the noise reduce.. But sometimes still can hear..

Bro, I thk my sound gone ord. Went to Kelvin's plc to change some things n clean throttle body. After doing that he plug in the OBD device to reset back the engine settings n now engine is more responsive, smooth, FC improved n torque increased. Like what Jazz said engine ping could be the cause(guessing only) n I'm still using 95oct petrol.

Bro, care to share the things that you have changed?   ;D

I changed air n aircon filter, plugs n CVT oil. Discovered tat everything very dirty ord. My car was pre-owned, maybe previous owner didn't replace those. But i think the only significant change tat matters could b the reseting of the engine n I'm only guessing. Still curious abt the sound tho...hope dis helps

I'm having the sound too, been there for past 2 yrs or so. Noticed that when I first start off the car, its fine, the sound usually starts after then engine has been running for a while. To mee this definitely feels like engine ping.
I think what bro Jazz said is correct, "cause by bad ratio mixture of fuel and air which indirectly incur bad combustion",  feels like the car is running in a higher gear than it should for the current speed of the car, which is probably why it happens more at lower speeds.

So any other feedback on how to get rid of this sound....  thanks for all the inputs.

You may want to do a TB cleaning and re-mapping or tuning ? See if this helps.  ;)

Where is KElvin's place?
sms me at 94554903....

mine is exactly the same problem... 1 knock at the start around 10km/hr then 5knocks at 30-40km/hr only at startup...
from stationary at traffic light no problem.....

 :confused1:

That is the ABS sound.  Very normal.  Always kick in at startup when you reach 30Km/hr.  This is to inform you that ABS is still working.
