This sounds to be of concern to all Latio owners.
I saw my log card and it says -
Maximum Laden Weight : 1415 kg
Unladen Weight : 1110 kg
That means Latio can carry a load of only 305kg.
Assuming that each occupant is 70kg, that means the maximum number of people that the Latio can safely carry is 1 driver and 3 passengers - total 280kg, excluding things in the boot and spare tyre etc.
Will the suspension or other parts be spoilt if we exceed the maximum load?

The diplomatic answer is Yes. Owners are not encouraged to exceed MLW of the vehicle.
Realistic answer is it depends on how much you exceed and how often. The 1415kg is probably about 75-85% from the failure limits.
Grossly exceeding the limits will cause the suspension to bottom out and every bump will be transmited to the structures, possibly causing damage.
The tire pressures are also designed to take up to the MLW so when loading more, the tire will not be able to maintain the correct profile and hence affect road contact and the braking distance.
Then of course, stopping distance will also be affected because the brakes have to work harder. If there is alot of braking, there will be a tendency for the brakes to overheat.
I have had a full load of 1 driver + 4 sizeable males quite a few times and so far so good. Only thing is have to drive out slightly before they get on oherwise tow hook may get stuck on kerb.

This has been discussed over the years.... even in Japan based forum. :smile:
anyway, for your info.... some of the car make did not even publish their maximum laden weight in their sales brochures....
those that have payloads <305kg are very common on the road as well..... Toyota Axio been one of them :)
like wat bro aerosignal has mention.... the diplomatic answer is not to exceed.
But there is pretty much nuthin we can do except to try & keep within limit.

You can reduce your risk by purchasing tyres with better loading capacity.

I think this has nothing to do with tyres, but the vehicle itself. ie. suspension and shocks, joints etc.
I wonder what long term consequences are there if I carry above the maximum load limit on a daily basis, which is very likely for me. Of all points, I missed out this point when hunting for a car. :(
Most Jap cars of similar capacity has at least a 400kg laden weight limit.
Even a cheap, bottom of the range 800cc Chery QQ has a 405kg laden weight limit.
I think there must be something wrong with the Latio? :confused1: And the safety of Latio owners are of serious concern too.
As most Latio on the road are only 3 years old, no one can guarantee that few years down the road, when most Latios get older, the problems due to the low laden load limit of 305kg will surface? :unsure:

I think so.. that's why I can feel that the suspection is really soft when 2 passegers sitting behind.. it will hit the kurb most of the time during reverse parking.. it never happen to my previous ride..! :crying:

soft is one thingy.... the clearance between the lowest point against ground for Latio is the smallest, compare to other vehicles....
tats the actual cause for hitting.....

Couple of weeks ago, I went to TCM because I felt the suspension got some issue, like what some of you mentioned, when there is some passengers at the back, I will hit the curb when I reverse. Even I go over a hump I will can hit the base of my car. Man! Also when I go slow from Level 2 to Level 1 on a multistorey car park, it will hit my base. Complained to them, a few hours later, they fix it by renewing my rear suspension. Since then, all is well.

ya went back to TPY or Ubi rite? Think only them have the equipment to check....went to Lokyang.... they only can do visual checking.....

I think you are mistaken between the Honda Jazz and Honda Fit, both of which share identical bodies.
I noticed that <1600cc cars for the JDM market have a low laden weight of less than 300kg, unlike export models which have a higher laden weight in excess of 400kg.
Probably because JDM models are manufactured for local Japanese who are more petite in nature?

So I wonder if Latio is manufactured for JDM market or meant to be an export model?
This is of serious concern because export models are 'tropicalised' to suit our local hot and humid climate for long term optimum running. JDM models are not.
And on the maximum laden weight issue, Latio's 305kg is insufficient for S'pore context at least, with a local male weighing in excess of 70kg on average. I read that Latio has a sitting capacity of 5 pax.
5 pax x 70kg= 350kg excluding accessories added to the car and items in the boot.
What are the long term implications of exceeding the maximum load limit in the Latio?
