Title: "Kiak" Sound When Closing Boot
Post by: clarence on August 10, 2008, 08:52:59 PM
When I close my Latio boot, I hear a "Kiak" sound coming from the 'X' cross rod below the boot lid (above CD changer).

There is a small plastic clip holding the cross rods together but no matter how I adjust it, the "Kiak" sound still occures when I close the boot.

What can be done to rectify this?

tcm... first i dun recommend u go thre otherwise two things might happen
1. make your blood boil with their "OH IT IS LIKE THAT ONE!" reply (tmd i was freaking pissed off by them...)
2. they will put the thick sticky grease on the red plastic and make a mess out of it...

the solution is simple.. i think just put some WD40 or singer oil or tamiya grease (i used this)

WD40, just spray on the joints, will make it smooth like lubricant.

I used to have the same prob too...went back to TCM to retify this prob during last servicing...alternatively you can use WD40 too...can solve potential 'sqeeking' noise too...

I also had this problem since 5k.  Today I bought WD40($5.8 small bottle) from HomeFix and spray to those joints.  It solved the sound problem.

Give it a try and no need to wait for TCM to fix it.

Btw, for my case, it is not the x-cross part where there is a red clip.  I spray to that clip first but still have the sound.  then spray those joints on both sides.  The sound was gone.

Does anyone know what is the real cause of this problem?

Latio is so special, to have the cross rod below the boot lid, which I feel is unnesessary and causes this problem.

just make sure the spray goes inside the joint holes.  It comes with a straw.  Point it to those holes.  Use a flashlight if cannot see clearly.

This morning tested my boot again, no sound.  Happily open and close it for a few times.

Where are the joint holes located?   :confused1:

There are steel wires from the boot cover connected to the car.  Not easy to describe but I'm sure you will notice the tiny holes where the steel wires go.  That is the moving part you need to lubricate.

TCM @ Bkt Timah the guy told me is "normal". He showed me other Latio's boot aso, got that kiak sound.
After that, he applied some 'yok kor' on the rods, so sticky but the noise still there...

Recently, i used WD40 to DIY myself, solved so easily! Don't like TCM, s u x one!

Hi clarence,

Initially, i also do not know where are they. But use common sense then i lut.
At the left & right side of the boot (inner).
I just imagine & simply spray on the joints, it solved.

Regards.

It seems like almost all Latios have this problem.

Funny design.

Wonder why the cross bar is required beneath the boot?  :confused1:

i was told by the service staff the bar is to "spring" the boot up slightly when it is unlocked.

Had this problem a few days after collecting my ride. A bit of WD-40 and problem solved.

Other cars don't have this bar and the boot also springs up when it is unlocked.

Those usually use more expensive compressed air piston. Those pistons tend to get worn and stop springing back after some time too. Got nice "psssss" sound when openning and closing though.

I am referring to conventional Japanese cars with 2 U shaped bars at the side of the boot which allows the boot to spring open when unlocked.

No compressed air pistons or cross bars found in Latio.

yeah, but those cars use the gas struts to prop up the boot...
