Title: Battery Flat
Post by: dsrio on September 18, 2008, 09:50:55 AM
This morning my car battery died on me juz 2 mths b4 my car reach 2 yrs. Called nissan hotline & it cost me nearly $110 for them to come down & change a new one within 45 minutes.
Tell tale signs of a dying battery include,
1) when you start ignition, it takes a longer time to crank.
2) fuel gauage meter only jump to the indicated level a few seconds after engine started.
3) battery water level not a good indication as I just checked a fews ago & it was okay.
A bit disappointed as my previous car, its battery last me more than 3 yrs & I only change it because its terminal point was corrosive.

I think AA charges at least $150.

Maintenance free batteries are never as lasting as conventional ones which need battery water top up

Do you always turn off your air con and hi fi BEFORE you turn off your engine?

Starting your engine with hi fi and air con already on, can shortern your battery life

Did you install ICE? This is also a killer on stock battery size.

Post by: dsrio on September 18, 2008, 06:46:51 PM
yup, I always off aircon & radio b4 turning off my engine, been doing this for my previous car too, no ice installed. Maybe tan chong stock battery really cmi.
anyway, I am not really angry with this whole thing as when the car died on me this morning, I am not working so no hurry to go anywhere, juz called them and go home wait.

Mine lasted 14 months and I'm 16 months into my second battery which is maintenance free. Think the modern car battery is stressed alot more than the older car batteries and there are many more things to check and monitor. Besides, woofer are getting bigger.

Batteries are temperamental. The one in my previous Sunny died the day after we took delivery. The replacement battery lasted the next 3.25yrs! It was still going when TCM decided it was dying and changed it out...

The one in my current Latio died after a 11months. TCM swapped it for free on site. Strangely enough, it died after I decided to be good and topped off the battery water. Contaminated battery water? Hmm.

Seems like most of our car battery are short lived... Tan CHong should seriously get
better battery. Its too weak liaoz.. They currently only have 1 kind and its the same
stock battery which comes with a new car.

As my wife is a AA lifetime member, they only bill me for the battery cost.

You must also understand that for those who got YOM2007 Latio this year, their cars would have been sitting idle in the warehouse for 1 year, hence the short battery life

Guess TC really using some lousy batch of batteries. I hv changed mine 1st time at 11mths ++ (luckily b4 i yr warranty), got it FOC. Sense the starting cranking was very slow/weak, immediately sent to TC to get it checked and replaced. Somemore they replaced for me a Maintenance Free Batt. Used that for less than 1 1/2 yr, died on me also in carpark. MFB also no use 1, somemre the indicator stil show batt good, so dont trust the indicator too much. Asked for TC tow-truck service, they came and changed for me a normal batt for ~$70++. Then changed my 3rd batt last mth, luckily also 11mths++ (left 1 wk only b4 1 yr), also drove to TC and managed to get it replaced FOC. U can c I hv changed 3 times at TC, all died so early.. haiz.. dont know tis 4th batt can last me more than 1 yr or not.

Assume your car should be out of warranty liao. As long no difficult in cranking, lights wun dim when halt, regular top up of battery water if wet cell, then dun waste money.

LatioR,

Your battery may be working fine with no problem cranking, but batteries have a life span of 2 yrs on average.

I am sure you do not want to be caught unaware and be faced with a flat battery when you are in  rush and also have to end up paying more to call for emergency battery replacenment service.

Don't be penny wise, pound foolish.

2 years is about a good time to get a new battery as  a preventive measure.  ;)

fully agree, if do not replace your battery at half price at end of 2nd year, it is possible for you to pay full battery price plus emergency service several month later.

base on my and my friends' experience, quite a lot of batteries do not have any symptoms before dying.

hi clarence/rocket, i fully understand the consequence of battery flat, just try to save any possible $ as life now getting harder/tougher...mine, not from TC and that's why been told will not get 50% disc though it's still within 2 yrs (any lobang can get
50% disc elsewhere?)..by the way, still keep the cable from my previous corrola car and should be ok just in case...ha..ha..

**will try to change from my cousin in law in malaysia for ~RM$200, MFB..In singapore, have asked and been quoted with price S$100+(for panasonic MFB) or should be easily hit RM$250..Still wonder, I'm paying S$70+ for Amaron MFB (for my previous car) which is abt 1 1/2 yrs ago, how can the price go up by ~double within 1 ~ 2 yrs time..Any one know how much is the MFB for Amaron now (just quest sb about S$100 right?)?

Some basic rules to make car battery lasts:
For non maintenance free, check and top up water level, avoid draining the battery (listening to ICE) when car not running, try to start the engine to start up the car & re-charge the battery if car is under utilized.  Once the battery's capacity decreases there is no way to increase it back.
My previous rides' batteries last more than 3.5yrs.

Hi iagree, if yours is still the stock battery, then good luck to you if you are thinking of using it for another 1 yr. Normally our stock battery last around 1yr depending whether you play ICE or not. Some bros here last 9 mths+. Mine died around 1 yr 1 mth. That was before I play ICE. The second one from TC last around 1 yr 3 mths.

Bro, that's a good one! Anyway, I'm refer to TC stock battery and the replacement battery(non maintenance free) by TC. Those maintenance free battery battery can last around 1.5 - 2yrs depending whether you play "ICE" or not.

The price for maintenance free cost slightly more(Ard $20-$30). But lately, the battery price went up so expect to pay $100+. I bought mine mid of last year around $90(maintenance free) and its 55Amp. Hope this info helps. Just my 2 cents.  Cheers!

For non maintenance free, check and top up water level, avoid draining the battery (listening to ICE) when car not running, try to start the engine to start up the car & re-charge the battery if car is under utilized.  Once the battery's capacity decreases there is no way to increase it back.
My previous rides' batteries last more than 3.5yrs.

hi bro david, any guidelines for MFB to last longer?
