Title: How do your know when is time to change your rubber shoe??
Post by: NSman on November 24, 2008, 04:28:16 PM
As above,

How do you judge or estimate when to change your tyres?? change every 2 years?? or use until the thread wear off?? some hard compount tyre are lasting, even use for 20 months, the thread are still deep... or change it when you feel than the tyre is giving way when making a corner??

bro sometimes its not only abt the thread wear, the rubber compound will vulcanise after some time. Diff to give u an exact timing coz diff tyre diff grade of rubber compound.. just check if the rubber start to harden. tyre giving way can be due to many reasons, maybe the tyre tat u r on requires warming up etc.

so its checking for both the rubber compound integrity and threadwear. just my 2cts worth dont quote me if i am wrong wahahhaah

Thanks for the input.

I believe my tyre is getting harden, as my thread is still deep. FYI, mine is YOKO A.Drive R1, used for more than 2 yrs liao :P

But how do we determine the tyre is getting too hard? by using thumb to press on the rubber or finger nails?

eh i also interested to find out leh.. though my tyres are still brand new.. (no harm knowing more hehe)

Oh.. another question is that>> how do we see that our thread has wear off too much ?? I heard that there is a marking on the tires.. but ... where is it.....??? (i only see those Zi-Z lines leh)

the triangles indicate where the thread wear indicators are located in the the grooves

see page 8-31 of owner's manual

also stated "Never use a tyre over six years old, regardless of whether it has been used or not."

seem like it's quite interesting topic. As advise by my cousin who owned the tyre + workshop in malaysia (near Malacca), i've to change 2 tyres by early next yr while still can carry on bal 2 tyres (all the tyre still with at least 50% thread left lei). btw, my tyres already more than 3 yrs with milleage clocked at 52k km now (thanks to previous owner on the low milleage usage).

check closely if there are cracks in the tyres even if all with at least 50% thread balance
more than 3 years - can consider to change all 4 tyres

There is expiry date/shelf-life for all tyres, so pls check the DOM (month/year on mfg on the tyres), do not use more than the warranty period. You may check with the tyres' supplier for the warranty.

Read somewhere b4 pls look out for side tyres "crack lines" when tyres are too old le.. even if ur thread is still good.. be careful.
