Title: Mileage Needle dropping too fast
Post by: lation on December 14, 2008, 09:39:01 PM
Hi, i am a new latio car owner of abt 3mths. Have went for my 2nd servicing already. I recently noticed that my mileage needle has dropped drastically. Usually, it can fetch me abt 11-13km/L. However, i realised that the needle is now at half tank mark and the mileage is only recorded at 189KM. I was astonish and very worried.

If there is anyone with similar experiences, pls provide some pointers?
MAny Thanks~

did you change tyre size?

erh..mine is 15" given by Tan Chong. Does the psi of the tyres has an impact? isit mine too low?

if you change the rim and tire, your mileage meter may be off. Sure, air pressure is important for FC, check it soon.

189 half mark hor.... sometime I also get that but It is due to my driving route and luck (red light, slow big bus turning etc).

Usually I get 80km for 1st quater...den 250km for half mark den 350 for 3rd quater..

Mostly city driving..Usually I get 11-12km/l..but I change stock rims to a replica now and im getting 15km/l...

Dunno accurate anot..because last calculation was pumped at half mark...

Hi, need advise from you guys. I bought my Latio sport CVT 2 month ago and i also having this problem too. My full tank can only allow me to drive not more than 360km. Is it Ok?

My mileage drop drastically too after 1st servicing... but after 2nd servicing it revert back to 250km at half tank mark....

I think its because of the ECU tuning.... after servicing the ecu WILL RELEARN your driving paTTERN.....that's what i was told.....

but now my mileage is pretty consistent.... at 13km/hr

for almost 100% city short start stop driving, ~400km for my CVT. 360km is a bit too low.

Did you pump your petrol till very full?
The floater in our car not that good & is not accurate.
I use to pump till the tip of it & end up i need to change my floater.
Full tank but my reserve light on ,bring back to tc & change a new one.

They will have to take out your rear seat & need to wait for 1 day.
After collected my car is full of petrol smell.

Thanks for the reply. So what should i suppose to do in order to get at least 400km? it that ok if me and my girlfriend are sharing the car? Can the ECU handle two person driving pattern?

dun always ram your car lor....
my rpm normally stays within 2000 rpm....  :bleh:
if yours is a CVT also no point ramming....
better to let your car gradually speed up....

Thanks for all the replies here. I will monitor it again. I usually only drive on highways. Could it be also due to i am still on mineral oil? Think i will highlight to TC when i am going for the 3rd servicing.

Hi Lation,

I had a same issue when I had my Latio Sport CVT 16inch rims after 2nd service1 (1000 km), guess its the mineral engine oil TCM provides for free, i was getting around 10km/l too.

I brought my own mineral oil for the 5000km servicing and it help slightly as i was using SAE40 oil.

After 10000km changed to synthetic oil after reading all the posts hear and it help jumped to around 12km/l
That is what my SE mentioned after i collected my car, it will around 12km/l after 10,000km.

Tried VPower and my latio is able to reach about 13km/l after 2 full tanks.

So just hang in there till you reach the milestone.

Could it be possible that TC mechanics leave the engine running for extended periods while performing servicing tasks? It has happened to me before. Returns to normal the next tank.

BTW, TC usually adjust tyre pressures to ~200kPa after service. May want to bring that back up to at least the recommended levels.

Thanks you sound very encouraging. Guess i will hang in there still. Now is nearing half tank and i am at 149KM. Pretty sian though. Will keep monitoring, maybe will highlight to TCM if it doesn't improves till then.

Hi All,

It has been discussed b4 here, where most of our needle will drop faster fr Full tank to middle, b4 slowdown to empty. Eg. for mine, 1/4 = ~80km, 1/2 = ~200km, 3/4 = ~350km, Near Empty ~470km. Few of us hv complained to TCM, nothing much they can do, altho TC tried to adjust (tink the Float sensor inside the fuel tank). One main reason they said is becos of the tank design (bottle neck which is more narrow on top, therefore needle drops faster during the begining).

More accurate/important is to monitor fr full tank to the empty light on, to calculate ur overall mileage. If there is any major changes in this, then u hv to check wat is causing it. :)

Of cos not happy with this problem, cos v "rugi" for us who travels v often to Msia, where the 3/4 rule apply. Hv to top-up earlier than suppose to b when lower than 3/4.

Why or how you calculate your overall mileage for ? If you meant FC, regardless of what shape or how much fuel is used, you still able to calculate based on distance covered over your fuel quantity filled.

No la, TS was worried y his needle drops so fast to half when only travel shorter distance, which is common for our Latio car, so might not b related to FC..

I'm running on 205/45/R17 tyres and im getting bout 270km at the half tank marker. But as this is only my first tank i shall monitor it more but am surprise with the 17" its still gives decent mileage. As long as it fetches me around 12km/L im happy liao :D

That is excellent mileage on 17" rims and tyres.

Do you do lots of highway driving?

I usually get 250km at the half tank mark, running on stock rims and tyres.

Mileage already 10,000km.

Of course! As people grow old they run slower too.  :bleh:

Try to have regular and proper maintenance, and your FC shouldn't drop alot.

12.7km is consider gd ar? my friend told me by right should fall between 13km ~ 14km. anyway guess is because my driving method keep on braking.

other problems ar.. let me think.. yah faced a few problem need advise

1) turning ~ cornering lor.. always felt that the car going to fell off 1 side.. haha
2) When i place the car in PARKING MODE; it always will still move backward abit like it was park on a slope when it was'nt.I ask my friend to sit in the car also felt the same.

Other than that quite ok bahz..

I do agree with SoL comment as mine also the same yr/mth as yrs but the best FC in local is aroud 14km/l (just hit this recently) but drop again to 12.5km/l again after my tyre change to 195/60/15 but sill monitor the fc for next few tanks to conclude. At 57k km now.

hi all, my FC hit 19km/l on ~100% M'sia NSHW (even top up petrol to full in hw) which is really to my surprise too. Believed the ECU reseting on RPM at autosaver really a good help in FC.

I would agree. When I 1st got my ride was travelling around for CNY and FC was 15+, then come back to my normal routine to and fro work etc. Was down to 12+... If it maintains at 12+ then its not any better than my previous kimchi. Was expecting to maintain at 15+ but guess its not the way since running in peroid and route of travel had became congested lately.

just went for my 10k servicing, feedback to them that seeing fuel needle can drop by 2 - 3 marks after driving just driving off fm my MCP 3rd floor to ground or as and when on the road. Quite worry run out of petrol, can reach warning lights and hit the last mark but petrol intake still around 37litres.  Feedback from SE that this is a common problem as sensor is damage in tank and change the sensor. Take car after servicing, pump to full, and notice that from a full tank when needle will start normally above the 1st mark, I normally will travel only about 27km before hitting the 1st line marking, today i hit 67km at the first mark, a first in my 10k journey. Will track if my FC improve with a more accurate needle reading. Normally hitting 480 - 500km for a full tank upon warning light up and plus est 10km before topping up. Maybe that is why bros out there is seeing above 500km for a full tank ?

wow how you drive? 378km only used up half a tank.
mine almost touching the "E" liao then i could get around 378km.
previously used to hit around 420 to 440km for full tank.
last few months only hit <<400km , dont know what happen?
seem like many others here also having the same FC drop issue.

Hi fri13th, I'm very sure that able to match yr best FC with 100% patience, at 100% M'sia NSHW, Low rpm, eg. 1.8 to 2.3krpm (Max) and with "same pedal position => do not change of fuel injection" => next time MUST take photo to show all liao :devil2:

previously used to hit around 420 to 440km for full tank.
last few months only hit <<400km , dont know what happen?
seem like many others here also having the same FC drop issue.

hi bro! u can read my previous posts where i listed all my good FC tips and most if not all bros reported that my tips are helping with their Fc

**Back to local with JB petrol top up every wkends (inclusive of 50 mins jam at chkpt to and fro) -> average 1/2 tank only at 250 to 270 km niah...
Hey bro FYI the half tank pic i just post is also pumped in jb with jams at causeway b4 returning home :devil2:

Heheh, managed to hit 700km before low fuel light comes on. Went to pump straight away calculate FC.

18.83km/l! Still far from my target 20km/l... Last time still can hit when driving 95% highway, 5 % city. Now weather so hot have to on AC, plus some city driving liao, so FC drop.

Also confirmed low fuel light comes on when tank has around 8 litres of petrol left.

Of course accurate. I've gotten 19+km/l before, so this is entirely possible. I try to off aircon whenever possible, but recently damn hot lah!

I think "just" not really follow closely on the FC topics and that's why got doubt on yr meter reading (which I did too b4). Fri13th and SoL are a few with FC > 18km/l (and constantly hit this records) and also share quite a number of Great tips on FC. Thanks

Ya, you are right, I just log in whenever I'm free, din read all the history posts.
To me they are very amazing to achieve double of what I or most of us hitting.
This also show how inefficent the FC of an engine - a lot(about half) of fuel is wastage due to our bad handling of the car.

Haha I wouldn't say bad handling, just that its a different style of driving. I used to get ~14km/l  last time, and i would get very happy when I hit 15km/l. That was the days of aircon and 120km/h and 3k rpm.

Now I realised I'm doing fine even with 80km/h and 2k rpm, and sometimes even when I tried to drive more aggressively to see how low FC I would get, I'll always heart-pain. I guess its a habit already!

Well its one habit I'm not going to get rid off anytime soon! ;)

I realised Latio can get >17km/l but have to drive at certain pattern. If it is safe to drive a little faster, I will buy some time with that little amount of petrol. I got 16km/l+ before driving at 90~ 100km/h on highway once, and that's it.

FC is depend on 1) how keen you want to set record FC
                       2) how much you value the time taken over the petrol used.

I get single digit FC in SG but its ok, I am happy with what I have. My one tank last one month, what else can I ask for  My FC will cross 10km/l if I have more green lights on the road.

Hi Ying, mine can achieved better FC with 90~100km/h..refer to the link below for details. Thanks.

I also can get +16km/L drive around 90kmh SG to Melaka non stop. However in daily city driving. frequent start stop means more petrol needed to overcome car inertia to make it start moving, so FC sure bad even I drive at 90kmh. When the car is moving, minimum petrol is needed to maintain constant speed.

Hi bro Ying, i think u hv missed out the details, actually can hit > 19km/l (if not be cos of Melacca city drive). My better FC only come in after the RPM tuning (it's referring to engine speed) done by autosaver (reduce from 736rpm to 690+rpm).

Hehe means you haven't pump till full la! Try to go slowly bah. But I heard pumping to full is not good, will damage the fuel sensor.

Hi, it's done by autosaver, handheld diagnosis device (i think, not sure what's a correct name for that). I'm referring to the print out copy for this RPM details.

Hi SoL, for me, it's doesn't matter anymore as I usually pump to the rim and believed the sensor already spoil liao :devil2:

btw,how much did u did for your tuning?

In local, not much diff (still ard 12 ~14km/l). As in NSHW, it has improved from 16km/l+ to 18 ~19km/l+ now (with the sacrifice of speed, eg. from 110~120km/h to 90~100km/h). The tuning is FOC together with the service package.

how to pump to rim? petrol keeps on dropping though i pump to rim. it takes like another 20++ times to pump to rim but petrol still flow in slowly.

Maybe u are pumping too slow and that's why not able to pump to rim :bleh:..Usually for me, after it about reaching the rim, will need to top up another 1L+ and then will reach close to rim, afterwhich, will neeed to top up 5 times+ to reach the rim (slowly).

**p/s: do check if there is any petrol leak out to the floor which caused u not able to top up to rim, just a jokes :devil2:

1) % highway/city driving? 70/30
2) Brand and RON petrol used? mobil 5000
3) Tyre Pressure? Front 270, Back 250
4) Driving with air con turned on or off? Air con on 100% set temp at 23-24
5) Drive mostly during the day or at night? 50/50
6) Brand of engine oil used? amsoil 5-30w
7) Mileage? going 10k
8) How many people are usually in the car or just yourself? 3-4ppl
9) Any modifications done to your car? ez-stab and spark bridge
10) Do you use any after market additives? never before.

i think we all have to drive smart lor....example like dun fight with gravity when going up slope and floor ur pedal....down slope time press more and to pick up speed faster....look further in front to anticipate the traffic lights changes the lesser u use ur brakes the better ur fc....and also leave home 15 mins earlier everyday so we dun have to rush and ram our engine unnecessary and can enjoy a safe and pleasant drive

Hi bro fri13th, thanks for the info sharing and seem like need to change to opc to hv better FC then :bleh: Btw, my last FC in local is at ard 13.5+km/l and NSHW @ 18.91km/l (eg. clocked 377.1km at 1/2 tank @ 95% HW). I'm on normal shift and normally get stuck on SLE towards CTE b4 coming out to AMK area.
