Disturbed by rumbling sound emitted when moving off from 20 -40. This happen after my 20k servicing at TCM. Did drive to KL following that at constant speed 110-120.Discovered when back from trip.Sent in my car to TCM but was told this was caused by by term they use 'pinking' which they advise will resolved upon using high grade fuel. Been using shell 98 since day 1 and my car not even 2years. I'm no expert in car maintenance but is there a jargon as 'pinking' to decribe a rumbling noise? Anyone out there experience similiar situation. Need feedback before going back to TCM since warranty still valid. Thanks all.

From my limited knowledge, i think the term is not 'pinking' but 'pinging'. Unless memory serves me wrong, pinging could happen when you are using a fuel of lower octane then what is minimally required by the car. Latio can take RON 92, and u r already using RON98. By right should be ok.
There could be other causes also i am not sure. Is TCM technician 'smoking' you? :confused1:

pinging aka engine knocking is no good for your engine and may cause damage to it. either the ignition timing of your engine is too advanced or your engine is running too hot. i dun think is fuel octane level cos our latio able to take 92 which is our petrol kiosk's minimum.
try to listen for any abnormal noise. pinging do not usually happen during idling, and it's start occur when you start throttling. it is usually more obvious when your full throttle aka floor the pedal.
if confirm is pinging, better send car back and bang table.

Rumbling sound and it's because of pinging, don't think it sound correct, the discription sounds more like a tyre problem, did they rotate your tyres at the servicing? Check your tyre pressure again. Pinging is more a fast knocking like sound from the engine compartment normally happens during fast acceleration and 20 to 40 don't sound very fast to me. Uneven wear on your tyres, most probably is the cause of your problem. The other possibility is your wheel bearing but at 20K km, it's quite unlikely.

rumbling or rattling sound ???
i think is a common problem for latio after driving some time, may not due
to RON 98
cheers

Yup...forgot to highlight, when pick up the car manage to go around the block with a TCM tester. He acknowledge posibility of the engine ignition timing too advance but advised to monitor with using high grade fuel. Any advise in pushing them to change whatever the electronic gadgetry to eliminate the annoying 'growling'?....dun want to resort banging table tho...many thanks!

using higher petrol grade should not even come before retarding the ignition timing. pls ask him to get his fact right. let me put it this way. under normal working condition, the engine should not ping, when if you use ron 92 (which is manufacturer's recommendation). if you did not do anything which resulted in the engine not working within it's spec, and it starts to ping, then they(TCM) should do something abt it and not ask you to find your own solution.
is this the kind of after sale TCM expect their customers to receive?

Possible that your gearbox assembly might need to be changed. Sad to say.
