i believe the fume of the petrol can keep the tank oily although i read somewhere which some ppl claim that the tank will rust if you did not fill up to the max.

I read about the tank become rusty too. For me, pumping full tank is too heavy for the car and affect FC. Also waiting for petrol price to drop, so usually i pump half tank. When car is moving, the petrol inside the tank splashes and will 'lubricate' the rest of the tank. I thought so. $20 is too little liao.... for me can only last 2 days or so.... so troublesome to keep visiting petrol kiosk.  :bleh:

I believed that Latio's petrol tank is made of plastic so rusting would not be a problem

Right.  Take a peek at the bottom and you will see that it's a black color plastic fuel tank.

This issue of a "rusty" petrol tank is relevant only if your car is parked idle over a long period of time.

If you drive your car daily, there is no concern.

If you rust proof your fuel tank, think it will also be the time to change your ride or al least overhaul your engine, great excuse to change car. Forgot to add that you'll need to change workshop too because if they do that, they shouldn't be in the business either.

Thought someone said it is plastic? How to rust ?  :confused1:

I reserve to believe the fuel tank is make of plastic, petrol is kind of chemical and don't think plastic can withstand it. I have seen my previous bike fuel tank, usually is made of steel coated with zinc or aluminum.

Could it be only the external wall of the tank is plastic? Thats why bro david says it is black plastic.

hi bro jazz, talk abt bike, i'm quite sure that mine is made of plastic (maybe of fibreglass) for my former Yamaha TZRR, 125cc.

There are many types of plastic.  Some of them will melt when contact with solvent, some others no problem.
Like LatioR mentioned, I've seen bikes with plastic fuel tank before.
Think it's a very high density plastic with benefits like lighter, higher impact resistance, corrosion proof as compared to metal ones.

metal or not, can we verify by magnet test on our petrol tank?

I think we should just pump 3/4 full as what MIdnight has said about affecting FC. petrol evaporates faster in full tank rather in 3/4. it wouldnt vapour as quick compared to full tank.

the cons is, you are not able to monitor your petrol consumption.

There are some plastic such as polypropylene which is tough and not fragile. They are able to withstand high corrosive acids and alkaline. Think PP or HDPE plastic material can also hold petrol. That's why you don't see petrol or engine oil being sell in metal container in the supermarkets.

Why full tank evaporate faster?

One of the reason that i pump half tank is also because i can monitor FC. Just X2 to get the full tank estimated mileage. 3/4 tank a bit difficult....

i quite sure u can top up at any level and still able to monitor FC, eg. to track total milleage (from the trip metre) regardless of how many times of petrol top up but need to keep track the total L of petrol top up, but of course, the last top up to full tank (this will do).

**of course per trip FC will be diff to measure then..

Yo Bro LatioR,

May I know which year you owned your TZR ? That is 1 of my dream bike when young but couldn't afford at that time, only bought Yamaha LC kia .... I did change 1 fuel tank before for my LC coz it really rust inside as you can see when we fill up petrol, for mine, coz I bought 2nd hand, so the rust is caused by the petrol pistol which inflict scratches while filling up. Sad.

So can any latio guru confirm if the fuel tank is made of metal, plastic or metal coated with plastic material ?

hi bro Jazz, me bought at yr 97 at $7500 (2nd owner, yr of mfg sb yr 94). Me too like so much the exterior look of this bike (look like 400cc) but frankly speaking, this bike is not comfortable to ride (with rubber seat and strong vibration).

Yo Bro LatioR,

Yep, I agree, so is your fuel tank made of coated aluminum or plastic ?

TZR is definitely more comfortable than my previous LC kia and Suzuki RG.

IMHO, tink watever material they use to make the petrol tank, it shd b able to prevent oxidization or deterioration, and under warranty. Dont tink by leaving ur tank on low volume will cause oxidization inside/or outside, even if u din drive for sometime. It ll be a big worldwide recall if this problem happen. Based on current technology available, this is not a problem to them anymore. So dont worry about this issue. Cheers !

how many people need to change fuel tank filter? that's can be an indication of the quality of latio fuel tank.

hi bro, sorry for the late reply as still in M'sia celebrating CNY. I'm quite sure it's plastic (maybe of fibreglass). Gong Xi Fa Cai to u and all the Lations

I am happy with the FC so far - spending so much lesser on petrol than my previous MPV.

I read from the manual that the Latio Sports has a smaller tank than the sedan version.  Now I got difficulty pumping $50 and above to qualify for lucky draws or additional discount  :D

Yup. If i am pumping full tank, i will pump in 37 or 38 litre after the fuel low indicator lights up then no need x2 la..

My MPV drinks twice the amount of petrol as compared to the Latio.   :crycry:
