Title: Be aware of Aircon compressor noise
Post by: jonpaul0104 on June 06, 2009, 08:09:15 AM
Hi,

My car is abt 4yrs now and in these last few mths can hear humming noise from the a/c compressor....went TCM to check and they say a/c compressor need to change...

Was Quoted S$1358 to change compressor, pulley, belt, bracket..... :(

So for those cars still under warranty, be sure to feedback to TCM if u hear any humming noise from a/c compressor

Sure.. But the noise is from inside the cabin also can hear the sound even if the air con is not on. Its like an "old" chain running without any lubrication.. eeee.eee..eee sound. Very irritating 1. I thought its the timing belt at 1st.

Bro, sorry to hear that your a/c compressor has down. After knowing the quoted price so ex from TCM, feel very scarely.
Just wonder how is the humming sound like? Can the humming sound be heard in the cabin? Or how do you tell the a/c compressor is failing? For my ride, I do hear many sounds everyday, especially after a long drive. Sometime eee eee eee sound, sometime other sounds.... Don't know it normal or not? Can advise me?

Just to add.. My aircon still function as normal when my compressor spoil. It's still cold so I never suspect the aircon compressor at 1st. One way to check is open your bonnet and hear. The sound is coming from the alternator side area.

Can describe Where is the alternator area? I not very good at all this. For me i hear a 'buzzing' sound while i'm standing outside at the bonnet area (bonnet still closed), dunno whether is coming from aircon compressor. I got another Latio to park side by side and i dun hear any of such sound...

yes the sound can be heard from inside the cabin even if aircon not on...it is a consistent sound....but aircon is still working fine.....so i have not changed it yet....but will be doing so during my next service in maybe 1 mth time....

the alternator is just beside the engine oil dipstick...and the aircon compressor is below the alternator...usually way of checking is to use a long metal rod and press it on either the alternator or compressor to hear where the noise come from.....

Better to have it check by TCM before warranty end..preferable during the last few month b4 3 years. I had my check and TCM change my entire air con system FOC...cooling coil, a/c compressor... etc...

Yes tat y i advise owners to send in to TCM once they detect any humming noise.....my warranty is already over....so no choice but to pay from own pocket.....

Seems like this is a inherent problem in Latios....

Thanks for the tips. Just wondering if anyone here with the humming sound is kind enuff to meetup so that we can hear it. Cos i dunno if my buzzing sound  = humming sound... but i dun hear anything from inside the cabin yet... or maybe it is soft that i didnt notice it?

I got similar problem last year.
Went to Riverview Auto in AMK, and they confirmed it is the compressor.
Even if you don't turn on your aircon or just in fan mode, the aircon compressor is still being driven, because it shares the same shaft as the alternator and radiator.
I was told that in my case it was likely the ball bearing of the aircon compressor, but you cannot replace just the ball bearing.

If not replaced, it may just failed one day, and the whole shaft will jam, stopping the alternator and radiator. And you car will overheat and without battery.

Riverview charge me around $750 (can't remember the exact).
BTW, it is not true that only TCM has the bracket, pulley, compressor, etc.
Any stockist will have them too.

This morning I dropped my wife off to work.. when she got out of the car she ask how come my car got noise.. so i got off to listen... there's this screeching sound coming from the car.. engage (haven move off yet) R, D or L slightly louder. The sound is like what one of the bros describe.. like some rotating part no oil.. and i also notice after 30K servicing, my A/C keep cutting in and out.. even when the temp is set at 28 degree.. when pick up or climbing slope, A/C cut in the car like suddenly rob of power, there will be a noticable but small jerk  :crycry: wah lau eh...

Is this the same as what is being descibed in this thread?

Mine was a humming sound, no screeching.
But the pitch goes up and and down according to rpm.
Even at neutral, when rev-ing you can hear the hum and its pitch.
At Riverview they use a long socket spanner and touch at each part of the enginee (alternator, compressor, etc), and the other end to the ear or just feeling the vibration.
With that he can tell which part is vibrating the most when rev-ing.

BTW, if you set your aircon at 28 deg, it is quite normal that it cut in and out.
afterall the aircon has to maintain the "warm" you set.
You should be setting it at 24 or below.

Oh okok.. lunch time i will drive out again see if i can narrow down the source of the sound.. i tried setting at 21 also like that.. :( this happened after my ambinet temperature sensor was replaced.

can be due to aircon filter (condensor choke). replace the condensor, around $50 I think, and not the compressor...:)

when aircon compressor up lorry, u can hear an unique sound which u dun normally hear when driving.  Sounds abit like air suction.  Can hear when u step on gas or brake.  But when u off compressor by pressing A/C button, the sound immediately gone.

The high pitch screeching sound which u hear very loud when out of car but not when driving is the fan belt problem.

The hissing sound like air leaking can be cooling coil leaking or not enough aircon gas.

yup, when u drive out of carpark u see people looking at ur car like u are driving some supercar...  Very loud n irritating sound but u cant really hear it if u close ur window n on radio due to our good sound insulation.

It will go away after car is warmed up, but dun ignore it. The belt got cracks liao...

Always investigate if there is some funny sound that u dun normally hear, surely somewhere got problem.
