Title: How much you can save at the pump!
Post by: SoL on June 06, 2009, 10:15:54 PM
Just want to share some info with you guys.

A year ago, I was getting 12km/l, which was pretty average. Now with more skills and techniques, I'm getting 18km/l on average. While it doesn't sound like a very big improvement, let me show some numbers.

Lets say I go to pump after traveling 400km.

With 12km/l, I need to pump 33.3l of petrol.(400 divide by 12)
With 18km/l, I need to pump 22.2l of petrol.(400 divide by 18)

The difference is 11litres of petrol, which at let's say $1.50 per liter, is $16.50

That's how much I'm saving everytime I go to the petrol station, much more than any credit card discount or voucher can give me. Assuming I pump twice a month, that's $400 I'm saving a year!

I'm just sharing this to get people to drive smartly and efficiently, if not for Mother Earth, do it for your own wallets!  ;D

My FC averages 12.5km/l and I travel about 2000km a month. My petrol expenses is only $120 per month.
How? Pump in JB lor! My yearly saving is at least $1,440 and I don't even need any special driving skills or techniques. :yehyeh:

I'm using esso 5000, constantly getting around 16km/l, plus minus 1.

I think fuel type only play a smaller part on fuel consumption, the main factors should be your driving habit and pattern.

What is your driving pattern?

At least 90% highway driving?

What brand and octane petrol do you pump?

80H/20C

Petrol brand and octane rating makes no difference to me, or rather, the difference is hard to tell since I don't have FC meter, too many variables. Haven't been noticing much change in FC when I switch petrol though, so I stick to my belief that petrol doesn't affect FC(too much, if any).

that was quite good. care to share your driving habits? I dun speed and rev my engine but i only managed about 230km at halfway mark with esso 5000. However I could manage 315km with shell 95. I could not understand why? Fuel brands do make a difference?

Differences in route, driving patterns, external temps making your aircon work harder, more short trips, ferrying more passengers, different travelling speed etc etc.

Really too many variables to say. Try for, say 5 tanks each, if it's still like that, then yeah, maybe fuel affects.

I've tried Shell V power, Esso 98 & 95, all yield almost similar results.

My travel pattern : 85% h/w, 15% urban.

From moving off, RPM around 2100 (mine is CVT), and at highway, my average speed is usually 90~100km/h on the fast lane (not slow speed at the center lane)

As for the fuel meter marking :
3rd quarter mark    : 150km
half mark              : 320km
last quarter mark    : 510km
Fuel warning light   : 580km
Highest km/tank     : 660km (42litles pump in, the f/c for this instance was 15.7km/l)

So actually I'm very please with 16km/l, like this car so much!

BTW, since you can achieve 315km with shell 95 at half tank, I think you are doing well too!

I'm a P-Plate driver, and this Latio HB is my first car. Just sharing something I've realised on driving habits..

Used to drive 1st lane 100km/h got average 12.5km/l.

Now driving 2nd lane at 80-90km/h got 13.88km/l.

Think patience also played a part in FC.

Driving slower reduces wind resistance, which has a big impact on FC.

Air con also play a part on FC. Air con takes up about 10% on FC.
dun set air con temp too low...

Now i cant get back the 315km at half tank. I used to have it while on shell 95. When i switch to esso 5000, FC dip alot.. but even i revert to shell 95, i cant get the mileage anymore...puzzling!

Thanks.

Which shows that fuel doesn't affect FC. Probably a change in your driving patterns.
