Title: Some tyre questions
Post by: SoL on July 23, 2009, 01:35:13 PM
Hello guys, just a few questions about tires.

I got my car 2nd hand a couple years ago, and it already came with Falken ZIEX-326 tires. 205/50R16 with rims. Right now, the tyre are very noisy, and I can't even stand the noise inside the car. Tyre mileage at 40k now.

I'm considering changing to a quieter set, since performance isn't my concern. I've heard great reviews of Hankook K415 and Bridgestone GR-80s. Are those available in 16" size? If now, how much would it cost to change rims to 15" and tires together. Got trade-in for this kind of thing?

Hi SOL,

I was on Falken 326 too but did not like the noise or wet handling as the tires then to skid when i start on stand still or hard braking in the Rain.

I have recently change to Hankook V8 205/15 R16 for about $476 for 4 tires at the Hankook agent and they are much better at braking and wet handling, in addition, the steering is lighter too.

Not sure about channging rims will save you money unless you are thinking of 2nd hand rims.

Regards

What about your old tires? Trade-in? Hankook now got promo, so I thinking of changing now. Right now primary concern is road noise, I'm ok with the grip of my current 326.

If you are concerned about rd noise, then the orig tyre size 185/65R15 is best for you.

You can check if anyone here is willing to do a swap of their orig 15" rims with you.

205/50R16 tyres are more expensive than stock 185/65R15 tyres.

hi guys,

Am on stock tyres & rims now, mileage is abt 40k, thinking of changing to 16" size. Main criteria for tyres is quiet and comfort.

Thinking of changing to Hankook V8 205/15 R16, as the reviews seems to be very good.

Btw, does Hankook change rims also?? What is the cost I am looking at for the rim change?? (if I am looking at rims that are lighter than the stock rims)...

Appreciate if any bro can shed some light.  Need to plan out the budget :)Thanks!

Bro Sol,
Have you changed your tyres yet? Any feedback on your new tyres?

Regards.

If your criteria is comfort and quietness, you may consider the Yokohama ASPEC DB. It does have complains regarding wet weather performance in its 15" version but from 16" 205 thread onwards, due to the greater surface area contact, its wet performance is decent for a comfort tyre. Saying this because that is what I am using and it is also recommended and used by my workshop boss.

The Hankook V8 seems very good as well, just a little more noisy I think but with better wet weather grip.

Same specs as mine.
Wet performance - excellent at 100 - 110 km/hr
Stability - improves a lot since it's a 16" rim
Noise - to me seems better than stock

No regret till now.

Thought that's a general phenomenum of tyres due to wear and tear. Even heard of some less than 10k got noise problem. This tyre is quite a all rounder as compare with other falkens. Also got not much choices when I traded in my stock.

Exactly, mine is at 33k km. Sound like a tank when driving at AYE stretch that is near to Jurong Birdpark. But overall dry and wet grip is still satisfactory

hi guys,

Thanks for sharing your comments and experiences! I have some options such as Yokohama and Falken besides Hankook for tyres  ;D

Btw, does anyone know what is the damage like to change the rims to 16"?? How much should I budget for the 4 rims huh?? Not very particular about made in which country, as long as it is lighter than the stock rim...
Your feedback and comments will be much appreciated!

Thanks & regards.

Yes, it will get noisy as mileage increased, but some tyres like GR80 which I sat in my friend's car Lancer, still quite comfortable and not so noisy as compared with other makes and brands. Hearsay like Aspec DB and DNA series also quite quiet after certain high mileage. Hope my PP2 fall into this category too.  :D

Yes, I also heard many comment about the sound of a tank which I really cannot imagine.

Also heard of review about the GR80, although comfortable and quite, but the wet performance not so good. So for bros who like to chiong, need to think thrice. Anyway, though GR80 is already not in production, and being replaced by AR10, which has better wet grip performance ?

PP2 should be a better tyre in overall performance. Price is more exp than falken 912.

dun know lah, I am on GR80 for ~30k tyre still looks good. when drive in MSCP at night still can hear the "sticking" sound.  People always say this or that tyre not good in wet, at what speed you want perform in rain? Most people will slow down in rain, even at speed limit most tyre will be ok ....  unless you are those that drive 160km/h in rain on NSHW.

That's good. At least I heard a good comment in wet. Of course not to perform in rain lah, not 160km/hr on NSHW, but I think should at least good grip at 90 - 100km/hr.

Maybe try to compromise to 16" with your CO. Some ladies dun like fierce fierce look, think you may want to chiong type. Psycho her that upgrade means better control and grip, and more stable. Let her join in the selection of the rims with you loh.

I also get ~ that price for stock size last year, I bargain on the wheel alignment service on top of balancing. Check the date ( a few month old is normal) and country on tyre before change, also look at how the tyre was store ( with rapping, keep in cool and dry place).

Eh a little hard .... lol .... just that CO  does not want me to spend cash anyhow .... cos she feels tires can grip good enough and best she can quote me as i did tell her last time before that bigger tires can also mean fuel consumption goes up ..... :scared: i lan lan since her memory so good ...... so sticking to 15 inch for now.....thanks for the advice though ...

Honestly, I feel the stock 15" wheels on 185/65R15 tyres are sufficient for S'pore roads and even NSH in M'sia.

If you want peace of mind, then invest in a good tyre, like the Michelin XM1 which I have used before and can attest it is good overall although price is on high side.

Becos V8 and Prime are under Ultra High Performance category, and GR80 belongs to High Performance category. GR80 is available at Autobacs, but i think its rather pricey at Autobacs.

In what aspects do you feel the stock tyre size 185/65R15 is not sufficient for S'pore roads & NSH which legal speed limits are 90km/h and 110km/h respectively.

Is your driving habit aggressive?

I have driven 2001 Hyundai Accent on 155/80R13 and 1992 Daihatsu Hijet on 145R12 stock tyres. These skinny tyres are what I call really "not-so-good" grip although I have driven them at speeds up to 100km/h without any issues.

BUT, 185/65R15 tyres not sufficient?  :confused1:   I am curious.

my ride (on stock tyres and rims) coming to 40K mileage soon...reckon it would soon to change the tyres...

intend to stick to stock profile of 185/65 r15...

previously read from the forum here that S*H Tyres at AMK Industrial Park is a good recommendation...hope it stays that way...

btw, i also read that Falken 15inch tyres are quite highly recommended/value for money

may i know which model is that?

generally what would be the price of that?

also, necessary for me to do a wheel alignment and re-balancing after the tyres change? if yes, generally what is the price for such service?

last question..if i want to change my stock battery as well (2yrs+ liao but still see no sign of problem), what would be the general pricing as well?

as you can see..i just want to make sure that i do not become a carrot stick as i have not done the above before..hence want to seek expertise advice here..

many thanks

different, he said about 195/60/15 so its wheel diameter is smaller than stock by 3mm, but 195/65/15 is 6.75mm larger than stock. The one I saw on on a Latio Sport is optimo tyre K415 or K715 I cant remember. I want some feedback by actual user. Thinking of this profile for my next tyre change.

By the way, how much it cost to do wheel alignment at hankook?

any rim suggestion? what is the ideal air pressure for such profile?
