Title: Question with Latio L gear
Post by: kennytoh on September 15, 2009, 12:04:08 PM
hi, just wonder what is our L gear used for?
is it for going up steep upslope?

planning to drive up genting with my frz tis coming weekend...but worried abt the downslope. if brake all the way, it will sure be overheated n cant brake properly.

any ways we can use engine brake like manual car??

I have been using the Sports gear when driving up and did not use the L (low) gear.

Yes, I also use the Sports gear when coming down the steeper slope.  If you need to slow down, brake but do not keep your foot on the brake pedal for extended distance to prevent overheat.

From my understanding, the 'L' gear and SPORTS mode works by keeping the the gearbox at low gear. But the 'L' gear is primarily is for up and downslope whereby u cannot depress the foot brake for extended time for fear of burning the brake pads. SPORTS mode has the same effect as 'L' but i will only use it for non-slope normal driving, when you need that sudden power for overtaking etc.

Of course NOT all the way, I switch to Sports only to tackle slopes.

The route from KL to Genting consists of the following:

(A) Karak Highway (links KL to Kuantan) ... it is a hilly highway but you can tackle it with normal D drive.  Look out for the Genting Highland sign to exit ... if you miss it, don't fret, there is another entrance after the tunnel.

(B) Security booth 1 - Security booth 2: You will need to use Sports or L for the steeper slopes.  You will go uphill for about 10-15mins before going downhill and then there is a flat part where you can pick up speed but be cautious of the windy part (accident area) as you come closer to Gohtong Jaya just before the circle leading to booth 2.

(C) Security booth 2 - Genting Highlands: This part is uphill all the way.   It is two-way until when it is closer to the QingSui Temple and the up-route become one-way.

I know some drivers use D all the way up but I prefer to take the steeper slopes quickly.  You probably don't want any motion-sickness prone passengers to throw out in your ride.

Have a safe trip.  Stop for adequate rests when you feel tired.

4AT got L gear? Mine is CVT, go up genting few times. I only try L gear once, car basically can't move fast, very high rpm. Go genting no need to use. I use D all the way up, tried once using sports mode but D mode is actually better. Sports mode car accelerate up slope slower, rpm remain above 3k and will increase a lot when you step more. For CVT, rpm can remain at times but car accelerate, just like normal driving, less stress with this mode.

Any 1.5L sure can go up genting. If CVT even better, maintain rpm to provide max power at any speed. No need to gear hunt.

Down slope use sports mode, car can maintain speed, if D mode car keep accelerating, dangerous and harder to brake. This is for the steep slope part.

Sidetrack a bit, I was surprised on my first drive down, the first expressway where there are many long slopes. It's the first time I experience another good point of CVT, when driving at 80-100 km/h on the long down slope, car downshift automatically, rpm increase and car maintain speed, no need to step on brake at all. On SG roads I never experience this.

how's the petrol consumption going up the slopes in genting?

I didn't monitor just on the way up. I will pump somewhere near KL, go up and next pump is the nearest to 1st link. Calculated roughly to be 15km/l, rather consistent. Heavy footed on way up, in NSHW travel 120-150 km/h.

when driving up slope , do u face any engine sound problem? i.e. to say the engine is trying to push hard to get up to genting?  :confused1:

Using 'D' gear is enough to drive up Genting. Suggest to wind down windows and switch off aircon to reduce stress on the engine, that's all.

Yup, forgot to mention need to off air-con when going up the steep part. Lesser strain on car engine, easier to go up, got to do that for cars below 2L (or maybe 1.8L).

Engine will be loud since at high rpm, this one can't avoid...
