ambipur car air freshener - beware!
« on: October 06, 2006, 09:33:14 PM »
hi,
first of all, dunno whether want to laugh or cry, maybe both. with regards to the ambipur freshener, dont get me wrg, its good but the thing is dont ever fix upside down like my dad-in-law did . i dont blame him anyways. the reason being, the liq would leak out and doing a fair Bit of irreversible damage on the centre console.Tat happened to me n looks like i got 2 cough up more money 2 replace the whole thing, kekeke :D

Hi crusty69,

am sad to hear the bad encounter u faced...  Had heard a similiar case from a Lation quite some time back...

3 options to solve ur damage.

i.) Change the whole new console from TCM (Confirm very expensive)
ii.) DIY by buying specific spray can meant for car center console... need to file 1st then spray.....etc...
iii.) Easiest.. buy something like a rubber matting or those grippy rubber mat & cover it up...hehe

Just some suggestions only...

Yo bro,

Going back to TCM to do the change??? (Your wife will scream even louder... :w00t: :devil2:)

Until now i dun think got any shop selling car center console due to it's requirement is very rare, unless selling 2nd hand one & also very very rare for a shop to have it.(You may wanna try NHK at Turf club city, they r selling quite a number of accessories for Nissan cars. The last time i went there, they seems to expand to one more shop.. meaning more things to see...haha...)

CheeRS!!!

Yeah, me 1 of them who has encountered this problem, now still hv to bear with the "defect" on the center console.. did checked with TC b4, they mentioned they din keep stocks, if need to, got to order fr Japan n will be costly.. the other choice is of cos re-spray the panel...

Only strange for me is tt the coatings used on the plastic console is not "chemical resistance", as this is not common anymore (there is lots of coatings/paints which is scratch and chemical resistance in the market)... did feedback to TC but no comment by the SE..

For me, think most of the liquid perfume (esp the alcohol content inside) will react with the coatings, so just be careful..
Simple...

bros... i kena this ambipur thing today also. it was late @ nite and the airfreshner drop out. so my gf help me put back but she put it upside down... none of us realize it because its so dark. but when i came back about 3 hours later... the car had a very strong smell, so i tot how come so strong, maybe my gf open the vent on the air freshener big big. wahlau... to my horror i saw all the liquid come out and my front console is a goner... sigh.. exactly 6 mths old car :(

any of you found out how much it costs to get it replaced at TCM?

i never trust aftermarket parts. they r usually of low quality and over the years you will start to notice the difference in quality of the plastics used. i don't mind paying for an original replacement...

lastly. dont buy these air freshners. i'll stick to my charcoal.

A little off topic but talking about air fresheners, did you all notice how toxic it can be to destroy your front console?

I cannot imagine myself breathing in such toxic liquid, which may not have any short term implications to your health, but for long term, I am not so sure.

the ioniser.... i think dont need to put freshener lah.. Just keep your car clean (regular cleaning) and i think the ioniser shld be sufficient.

But for those who eat/drink in the car very often, try not to leave any crumps in the cars... attract insects and have weird smells after some time

Here's the pic of the damage. it actually looks worse if u see the actual damage. the stained part is shiny while the rest of the plastic is matte.

i've managed to figure out how to remove the damaged panel. I was worried if the liquid damaged any electronics inside as the liquid dripped all the way down into the cup holders and the part where the aircon controls are.. the liquid seeped inside.

first u have to remove the instrument finisher on the top. this is the trickiest part. it comes off at about a 30 degrees angle. the pink arrows point to where the clips enter. do NOT pry it straight up. it will break your clip. you'll need some skills to pull this out.. and usually not without swollen fingers.

the next part is to remove the two screws (only 1 screw shown here, green arrow).. but please use a good screwdriver. when i mean good, i mean those stanley type. i broke two normal screwdrivers. the screws are very very very tight.
