Strange smell from Aircon
« on: July 19, 2007, 11:41:37 PM »
Hi Guys,

I get this strange chemical-ish smell from the air con now and then whenever I rev high somewhere abt 2.5k - 3k .
Anyone got any idea if this is normal? I asked TC during servicing and they said is some chemical by the ionizer.. but i thot ionizer
no chemical one? If i am not wrong, i thot ionizer is purely electrical..?

er bro,

2.5k - 3k is NOT high.

anyway, most prob is the ionizer. does give off a funny smell sometimes.

Hi Bro..

you are not the first.
I also got this smell a few times when i got my car.

But they didnt tell me is produce from chemical.
They tell me is the ionizer working and killing germs in the car.

Dig out this thread again as I'm having this strange smell when my aircon is turned ON but A/C button remain OFF (warm air came out). But this smell would go away when A/C button turned to ON (cold air came out). Is that smelled normal? I only had this smell this few weeks.

I have actually the same problem as you. Change air con filter also no use.

Change air con filter will not remove any unique smell inside the car cabin. Get those cheap charcoal and place inside, see will it help.  ;)

The smell only occur if there only turn on the Fan. If turn on air con, there is no smell at all.

I always thought this smell is normal. I had this smell in all my previous rides, when, if you just turn on the fan without turning on aircon, the smell  is weird. Dunno how to get rid of it.

I be watching this thread... if anyone has a solution.  ;D

hi midnight, for my ride, the smell only started few weeks back. I didn't noticed any weird smell during first two months after collection.

Hmm..i thought i was the only one having this strange smell. The strange thing is that i don't recall having this smell previously (have been driving Latio for more than a yr now). The smell will appear for a short period when i step on the gas and engine rev.

Can't be the ionizer right? Ionizer will not be linked to engine rev...but so far it has not affected the car in any way...just worried that the smell might be due to some leakage or problem.

Dun think buying a charcoal bag will help for me as the smell does not last..it goes away seconds after the engine rev.

Think the smell come when your rev your engine, the higher the rev, the faster the smell comes. After revving my ride more, I don't notice the smell anymore, perhaps, I got used to it.

My car has this smell. Quite pleasant like vanilla. Got it the first week I collected my new Latio Sport.
Presents itself when I rev sudden. Lasts around 2-3 seconds.

My theory is that the air con has to filter extra pollutants (burnt tyres??) when revving, and the output is this smell?
My 1K servicing - I told the Nissan folks. They only topped up my coolant. :(

Let me revive this old thread, Recently i encountered 2 times. The 'vanilla' smell came suddenly when i rev up suddenly for a period of about 2 sec only. The smell seems to be different from the smell produced by the ionizer when it is operating normally (when i am not rev-ing). My immediately thought is that something got burnt.

Has anyone got any logical explanation from Tan Chong or whatsoever?

Try changing your air con filter to solve this problem.
