Do I need new tires yet?
moochi:
Hi guys,
Took over a latio sports 8 mths ago, was told the tires were in original state (toyo make)
I have no problem with them so far, although the outer pattern has worn down, it has not worn down the middle tread yet. I feel that they are still very good on the road, quick response when i step on brakes and so on... btw, my mileage is close to 54,000 now.
So do i really need to change them? If so, what kind? I heard Yokohama and Hankook tires are good. Any input is appreciated!
Many thx for replying cos I'm a noob in automotive... :confused1:

I probably get flamed for this but the sure way to know when to change is when the treads are near the same level as the tread wear indicator. They MUST be replaced when they are at the same level or below (cannot tell when it is below because the indicator would have started to wear by then).
Here's a link for more info and what a tread wear indicator is.

I don't use feel or mileage for guide because one is subjective while the other differs for different tires.

hi bro,
in my opinion, at 54,000km, its about time to change. The original tyres better known as stock tyres are rather lasting and hence the thread may still be quite deep. Although you are still comfortable driving with these tyres, but they may have harden due to our hot and wet climate.
as a general guide, some pple tend to change tyres from the following reasons:
1. Average every 2 years (some bros i know change every 1.5 yrs)
2. Worn out thread (perhaps due to high mileage, or hard driving)
3. Unrepairable puncture (especially if kenna at the sidewall)
4. Because the current tyres are unbearable (noisy, too hard or not grippy enough etc)
5. Or, just because they want to try a new model of tyre for the fun of it.
An average user of the car clocks about 20,000km/year. Your tires are now 54,000km. Even if the car is young, the tires are definitely used for quite some times already. To me, since tires are the only thing in contact with the road, i would invest in good tires, because the concept is exactly like cheating on parking coupon or parking timing. u can escape many times, but u kenna 1 $30 fine, and all the cheating on the coupon goes down the drain. Likewise, get a good tire and u will have an ease of mind

For me, I make it a habit to replace my tyres every 2 years, even if there's still lots of thread left.
Tyres exposed to our local humid weather lose their suppleness and grip after continuously exposure to our unforgiving weather, plus sun and rain.
I rather buy the 'normal' tyres like Yokohama Aspec and replace them on a more frequent basis like 2 years, rather than buying an expensive Michelin or Pirelli and replacing them only when the thread is fully worn out. The costs comes to the same.
iagree:
I am always worrying abt Stock Toyo Tyres, don't know how can tahan for NSHW driving. Quite heavily used.
Now my mileage is 23000+ - , my 4th service i done outside, not at TCM. So the front&back tyres have not swapped yet, when shld we swap? Will TCM do for us? I am thinking to service at TCM msia for my 5the service.
Regards.
