Rust proofing required?

Hi, is rust proofing required for today's car (Latio)? Was quoted $385 for 3M, reasonable price? Not sure about Tuff Kote though. What is the complication if no rust proofing? Rust form undercarriage will lead to....???   :confused1: :confused1:

Before I collected my car, I asked the SE for Tuff Kote and he said that all latios have a galvanised undercarriage and it would be a waste of money to Tuff Kote. True? I hope so.

Go for undercarriage tar coating if you intend to keep your latio for 10 yrs.

Otherwise, save the money.

If you look at Latio wheel arch, you will noticer its uncoated bare metal.

Try any tar coating companies except Tuff Kote which did a sub-standard job for me - Unacceptable. Anotehr forumer who tried Tuff Kote's System 6 recently also expressed his disappointment on the poor job quality.

Tuff Kote and system 6 are entirely 2 different things. Tuff kote is supposed to be for rust proofing while system 6 is actually a paint protection thing (sealant).  Rust proofing using bitumen was developed mainly for cold countries where it snows. Unless it snows in Singapore, there isn't much reason to do it except to waste your money. If you have ever driven under snowing conditions, you'll know that salt is introduced to help melt the snow and by driving through these road condition, salt will be deposited all over your car, guess what happens next. Have you seen a car that has a rusty body in the last 10 years? I guess not. I've not seen any since the days of the Toyota Starlet (EP60), Toyota Corrolla (KE35), Datsun 120Y and perhaps the Nissan Pulsar days.

I guess what Clarence is trying to bring across is...The company doing sys 6 or tuff kote wasn't doing a good job in general. Standard no longer there etc.

Yup, i got the 3M one for my Latio. i know it's kiasu to do so, but i figured since i'm already spending soooooo much $$$ on my ride, what's a few hundred dollars to give me peace of mind, right? Just my 2 cents.  :thumbsup:

Brother, where did you done up the 3M ?  I asked becos my second-hand car has a 3M decal... wondering is it similar so that i can call up that Company to trace if it's already done.

Got it done at TCM by my SE. TCM is authorised dealer/workshop for 3M. Just call up TCM service centre n they can trace for u.

For those of u who want to DIY, 3M sells it in cannisters that u can spray on yourself. A fren just bot 6 cans to spray himself. i gotta ask him next week where he bot from.

or unless ur work place is near the sea  ;) i park quite near the pasir panjang ferry terminal.. salt spray from the sea can also cause rusting..

If u want to do it, do it because you want to protect your car - do it for the right reason.

Just wondering.....if dun do the rust proofing...the latio under carriage will degenerate? What are the degeneration tell-tale signs? If dun do, will have safety issue?

Brave soul.... :thumbsup: Quite terok to DIY. Have to jack car up, remove wheel, cover the whole suspension (or even remove it) then can spray. Coils ok but cannot get the stuff on the shocks...
