So when is the right time to change our stock tyres?

My ride is coming to two years this Sep and i am wondering if i should change the stock tyres since the general recommendation is 2 years. The stock tyres still look quite good but i understand that the lower end tyres normally last longer in terms of wear and tear but lose out in terms of performance and safety.

Always got this feeling that the car is taking a longer time to stop when i need to do E-braking even at a low speed so feel like changing to better tyres.

Is it a good time to get rid of the stock at 2 years irregardless of the condition? What good tyres are recommended? (looking at mid range ones that offer safety and comfort).

some ppl uses their mileage as a guage while some ppl change based on periodic. I tink if ur tyre tread is less than 1.6mm its more or less time to get a new set of fresh rubbers...

Heres my FR after a few days of driving. Initially, I thought the tyres is a bit heavy, then I realise it is because the tyres got good grip(stick well to ground) thus the initial feeling, drove thru the heavy downpour yesterday and its . Not sure is it fair to compare to my stock toyo which already serve me for 45k km but the new hankook sure is quieter.

On a side note, the mechanic  pump 230 for both my front & rear tyres and I must say the extra air(for the rear) did result in better FC for me w/o any extra feeling of discomfort.

hmm.. is it heavier when u steer compared to ur stock? where do u change it?
i juz minding my own biz why the others all cut me

GR 80 no longer in production, its replace by AR 10 which is made in thailand.. so y pay more for a japan brand tire that is made in thailand and not japan???

For me i will recommend u hankook optimo if u r a budget person or take V8 if u dun mind spending abit more for a better performance tire...

The stock tyres still look quite good but i understand that the lower end tyres normally last longer in terms of wear and tear but lose out in terms of performance and safety.

Ken: Yes you are right bro. High Performance tires usually lasts longer, but the traction loses when compared to Ultra High Performance tires (within the same brand, there are still some rather pathetic Ultra High Performance tires around). Fyi, Turanza GR80, Hankook K415, Michelin Xm1 are High Performance tires. High Performance tires usually have a Traction of A, Temperature A and Threadwear index as high as 400.

The 1 thing which many drivers do not know is High Performance and Ultra High Performance. Many take brand and compare pricing, but this is wrong, they don't even research on what they are paying for. Ultra High Performance tires usually costs more because of the different compound and construction, else how can the tire tahan speeds of more than 300 kmh?

Always got this feeling that the car is taking a longer time to stop when i need to do E-braking even at a low speed so feel like changing to better tyres.

Ken: Yep, time to change the tires if i were you. Try to research on braking distance. In Singapore driving, short braking distance and good wet grip are priorities imho.

Is it a good time to get rid of the stock at 2 years irregardless of the condition? What good tyres are recommended? (looking at mid range ones that offer safety and comfort).

Ken: Its definitely a good mindset that you have to change regularly. Safety first! If not, it will be like parking coupons!! Save that bit of money if u heng, but once suay, not worth the ROI man!!

Are you an aggressive driver?

In what aspects do you feel the stock Toyo J50 tyres cannot make it?

It has served me well so far.

information on sidewalls of Toyo tyres - Treadwear grade 220, Traction grade A, Temperature grade A

if Toyo tyres are really so bad, then how is it that these tyres are rated thus?

see page 9-10 Technical information of owner's manual for more information

may be good to conduct some "straight-ahead braking traction tests" one of these fine days to settle this matter once and for all

Definitely, I would use Toyo J50 tyres again!

In fact I recommended my brother-in-law to use Toyo J50 on his Fiat Doblo which uses the same size 185/65R15 as Latio.

His previous stock tyres were Pirelli Cinturato P4 before he switched to Toyo J50. It has been 6 months and he is happy with his new set of Toyos.

Great value at $90 nett a piece and made in Japan.

Most tyres are now made in Asia (cheaper labour and material cost) and yet cost even more than the Japan made Toyos.

i didn't really like 912 cos seems harder to brake although i have changed to 912 16/205 from v2 15/185. v2 seems to be more "responsive" in braking.. like sticky-er

I'm actually in favour of the falken 912. Upgraded from my stock toyo to the 205/50 R16 about a month ago. Better grip on the wet road, esp experienced it during these few weeks of heavy downpour, better comfy in terms of noise level and better stability and less bouncy.
