What to do with engine oil?
« on: April 01, 2009, 10:38:13 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have some questions abt engine oil.

1. How litres of engine oil does latio need?
I bought 5L of engine oil for my 3rd servicing and nissan return me the leftovers.
Donno how much engine oil did nissan use.

2. How long can the leftovers engine oil be stored?
I read somewhere that engine oil will 'expire'.
I am thinking of storing the leftovers and use it for the next servicing.

3. If I want to dispose the engine oil, how should I do it?
I dun think I shld throw it into the rubbish bin.
Engine oil is supposed to be harmful to environment if not dispose properly.

Have a gd day everyone.

Let me try to answer a few of yr questions:
Qn 1:   Our Latio needs 3.3 litre of engine oil. Sometimes the technician did not totally drain out all the dirty oil, so they pour only about 3 litres or slightly lesser in.

Qn 2:   Store in a cool place away from heat. Air tight. For my i will only keep leftover oils until my next servicing (abt 4 mths plus to 5) and then used it. Because after u open the bottle, it will/may never be as air tight as when it is unopened and factory sealed.

I called and asked before. It is about $70+ dollars off the usual price.

I am going for 20000KM servicing.
Nissan charge me $265 for the servicing and I bring my own engine oil.

So its $349.00 - $265 = $84

How to preserve an opened bottle of engine oil?

In my view, you can insert the tip of the vacuum cleaner into the tip of the engine oil bottle opening and turn on the vacuum cleaner to suck out the air (not all air will be sucked out, but most of it), then immediately tighthen the engine oil bottle cap.

Better be careful bro, engine oil is toxic. They wear gloves when changing engine oil for a reason.

Hi capcorn, how much Tan Chong refunded you during your 3rd servicing? (I supposed 3rd service is free and you bring your own engine oil). Did you do engine flush?

Hi arias48,

Tan chong did not refund me anything for my 3rd servicing.
If i am not wrong, for the 3rd servicing, they still use mineral oil as engine oil unless you said u want synthetic oil.
And for tat, they will charge u an amount for using their synthetic oil. Alternatively, u can bring ur own synthetic oil
and they will change for u for free...

Hi Capcorn,

pardon me for asking a silly question if it seems may be. How can you be sure that they dun 'pocket' your engine oil and put in their in-house flasflo or mineral oil?

I am looking for a service branch where i can take glimpse of the technician servicing my car and i can eyeball them filling up using the engine oil which i brought.

TCM-BT cannot... because the lounge area is away from the servicing area. How about other branch? Toa Payoh?

Don't think you can personally watch what they are doing at any TC service centre. You just send the car there and collect later that's all. You can only trust that they pour in the engine oil that you brought and do a proper servicing. Whether they betray that trust is another matter.

Me never went back to TC anymore after the 10k servicing. I do it at Autoxxxxx where I can stand there and watch them from start to finish if I so wished. There was once I stood at a discreet corner to watch. They actually emptied the boot, took out the spare tire to check! From then on, I knew I didn't have to watch anymore. They can be trusted.
