I'm using Fasflo.

Why not just stick with Carlube since it is quite reasonably priced at $29 for 5 litres for synthetic.

$29 is not reasonably priced, its CHEAP

That goes to show how cheap engine oil can be.

If the manufacturer of Carlube can sell it for a profit, plus the middle man, NTUC Fairprice making a profit as well, and there's also shipping costs all the way from UK, and yet a profit can be achieved by selling 5 litres of fully synthetic oil at $29.

Doesn't it feel silly to be paying $110+ for 4 litres of  Mobil 1 or Shell Helix Ultra?

Mobil & Shell are aggressive in their advertising + motor sports sponsorship.  So gotta charge premium for "branded" stuff.
Imagine if no brand petrol to be sold..... we do not need to pump at oil cartel

honestly, since you've already paid so much for the car, whats $110 more? you may argue you have to save money since you've blown so much on the ride, but thinking back, hey.. just take bus!

$110+ for some uncles and matured drivers is peace of mind. similarly, ask some people to install tires such as firenza and sonar or whatsoever, they would refuse and rather pay a premium for bridgestone, toyo and whatsoever. why?

they trust the r n d. so honestly, no point feeling dumb about it. to each his own. use whatever works for you, but try not to offend better who are better off and do not mind spending more just for the peace of mind.

Yup, totally agree with u! Since you are the one who paid for your car and the one driving it, it really is up to each of you to decide what suits your needs and your car best. To each his own! End of the day the important thing is to enjoy your ride!

i was the one. Still using, but 9k+ already. coming 10k.

personally, i feel its good for the first 4-5k km. but when 6,7k km comes along, not as good liao.

noisier, less smooth. engine rather black.

About engine oil being black, it means that the oil is doing its job of cleaning up deposits in your engine.

If the oil is not black even after 6K or 7K, then it's a worrying sign or it could be that your car is still new, hence no deposits in the engine.

Share with us please cos I think it a good info to learn especially regards to our engine life. Thanks.

I used Hicom once. Have a similar experience as you. My car went for a gearbox change so hard to say if it was the EO or gearbox causing the slowness etc.

Anyway I am back to Shogun, I tried TCM base oil before but went to Shogun until i tried HICOM.

Have to say, my experience with Shogun is good.

I bo pian pay the extra to $$$ to TCM.

I guess after warranty will start to visit neighborhood service centres..will still buy Shogun but save on lab & time & hopefully some $$$...TCM always takes a long time to service the car ;-)

With the exception of a brand new car where the engine is still new and is not as dirty as an older used car, there's bound to be carbon & sluge built up in the engine over time, and the engine oil will naturally get "black" in removing these dirt.

If your engine is still golden after 10,000km usage, then there's a big question mark.

Where's all the dirt in your engine going to?

Can you share with us your views on what you learnt about engine oil and how it differs from mine?

Above is a good reference for all.

Let's take it in general and not brand specific.

The primary objective of engine oil is to cool & lubricate your engine and remove sludge.

In removing sludge, naturally the oil will be "dirty" at your next oil change.

If the oil is not dirty, then it may not be doing its job.

firstly, dirt goes to the oil filter.

secondly, no oil will still be golden. anyone who cooks will probably know this as well.

and thirdly, what i learn is that engine oil lubes your engine system, NOT remove dirt and carbon. if it does, why do we still need engine flush for?

and since as you mentioned if new car engine oil might still remain golden, i wonder WHY is it a must to flush out during our 1k svcing, just use until we decide to scrap the car. better idea?

Hi I usually top up about $30 bucks extra for this oil from package A...if i remember correctly

Because i have only tried 3 brands so far, mine is based on the experience with the 3.

I find the std oild TCM gives Syn is not as good as Shogun for FC.

I am gonna be honest when i say that MY latio feels underpowered always...i have had gearbox changes that has helped so when i think of EO, my concern is always with FC

FC with Shogun inside...no complaints.

I am monitoring my FC with 2nd or 3rd top now. appears to be getting better...with Hicom it averaged 420km for about 40litrs....now moving back to 500plus Km or so for 40 litres

I know other factors influence but genrally my drive style & highway vs city driving stay very similar month on month

At abt 5000-6000 Hicom was making FC go up for my car & also felt a loss pf power agin..this may have been CVT gearbox issue related

I suggest you try all the recommended here keep a log then decide which is the final oil

My car is now 61000plus milage so i have had 6 oil changes. 1x TCM base oil, 1x Hicom 4x Shogun...my poref is with Shogun for now

but if any bro can convince that FC improves with another brand for the avg of the 10K, i will surely try....

pls note TCM does only a minor px cut if you bring your own oil in

I saw Shogun at Giant, wanted to buy but decided not to after spoke with BT TCM saying they take away $30-40 only....not worth the trouble..plus the oil would have caused abt $90 for 4 litres at Giant...

fc drops although it could be due to wifey also using car sometimes, feels it not so responsive especially during hot day  :nonod:

will be using back amsoil 5w30 for next servicing, used them for my 10, 20 & 30k servicing, am satisfied with it.

hmm, if shogun is good, may try it thus no need go buy engine oil myself.

You have to check the manufacture date of those cheap on sale engine oil at Giant.

I saw those 1 litre pack Mobil 1 fully synythetic oil going for only $15 each. So 4 bottles or 4 litres only S$60. Packed in Singapore. Same as those you get from Esso petrol stations retailing at about $110 for 4 litres.

Cheap right?

But the manufacture date was... ahem... October 2004.

Will sealed & unopened engine oil deteriorate over time?

Is it still safe to use 4 year old engine oil?

How do you differentiate the black EO is due to it's cleaning power or it's lousy properties? This I know, oil degrades over time and heat and the color darkened Once it color darkened, it loses it's lubricating properties.

Hi I usually top up about $30 bucks extra for this oil from package A...if i remember correctly

Because i have only tried 3 brands so far, mine is based on the experience with the 3.

FC with Shogun inside...no complaints.

I am monitoring my FC with 2nd or 3rd top now. appears to be getting better...with Hicom it averaged 420km for about 40litrs....now moving back to 500plus Km or so for 40 litres

I saw Shogun at Giant, wanted to buy but decided not to after spoke with BT TCM saying they take away $30-40 only....not worth the trouble..plus the oil would have caused abt $90 for 4 litres at Giant...

Hmmm.. then now i also feel like giving Shogun a try on my 1st 10K servicing... I am thinking of using Amsoil.. but LAZY to go buy ($70-$90)and carry over.

might use shogun

I saw those 1 litre pack Mobil 1 fully synythetic oil going for only $15 each. So 4 bottles or 4 litres only S$60. Packed in Singapore. Same as those you get from Esso petrol stations retailing at about $110 for 4 litres.

hmmmm... i tot the supermarket/petrol station EOs> shld be cheaper?? like $30-50 for 5 litres??

Those are usually for the non branded ones like Carlube Triple R fully synthetic selling at $29 for 5 litres.

But $60 for 4 litres of branded Mobil 1 fully synthetic is considered cheap.

hmm doing my 1st 10K servicing in 1 month time... i am thinking of using  fastflo first to see how does it feel to be on syn EO.. Then wait for next 10K to try other EO

for those veteran drivers>> do u think this is advisable or i just one shot buy Amsoil or redline EO and change?

The call is yours i guess, if you never use synthetic oil b4, maybe can't feel the difference between fastflo and your current mineral oil. Just like my wife, recently driving my car again after 1 year never drive due to pregnant, when I complained about the fastflo oil, she say no different leh, still very driveable  :D

well, I assumed they will use matching service reminder decal with the EO they use. Yes/ No? TCM put a shogun decal for me during last servicing.  Will confirm during next servicing.

 for your recovery... me still sick, need EO change soon, from western med to TCM (Traditional Chinese Med). Stomach week ohh... got check oil plug, else it keep leaking? :bleh:

I know nothing about EO when it is due to change it, so I really read this article. (http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html)

After reading it, I decide to do just one time engine flush when switching from mineral to full syn oil and will stick to full syn oil for the rest of EO change. Then looking for strong Hard disc magnet to put on the oil filter.

i am using Redline 0W30, its works fine for me, i ever delay the servicing to 13k before the engine note gets noisy and performance got kinda sluggish.   I have tried Royal Purple, Amsoil, Shell Helix Ultra, Mobil 1, Idemitsu, i think the better ones is Royal purple n Redline

I had tried the royal purple in my old ride before.. it is indeed good and engine feel quiet thou my old ride is 4 yrs old..
but quite hard to find le..  :(

There is no standard rule or guideline of which EO to use, is all up to each individual preference as I have mentioned before. Previously all the while I used to use Mobile1 Gold only recently came to know Amsoil. I have also tried Shell Helix and Redline but tempted to try Motul as many gave good reviews of it, but spending over $100 for it make me think twice.

the magnet is very strong and not too big, can stick direct on oil fiter cos it is metal. The part maybe foc when you have a crash hard disc and this is for fun only, not really look for big improvement.

I still think which EO I should buy for my 10K servicing. Currently just pass my 1K on the way to 5k engine seem to lag after the 1k service. I suppose it is the mineral oil which makes me wanted to buy EO for my next 5k service. a lot of you are using redline 0w-30. If we used it will it void the warrentry at TC as the recommendation is 5w-30.

Recently I got to know Mobil 1 0w-30 but really had second tots about going for it. Question like what if the oil is too thin what will happend... Please share your exp. I am a total noobe here. =)

Isn't the viscosity determined by the number behind? Like 10w30 is thinner than 10w50. I think the front is the winter rating, nothing to do with us. Not too sure though.

For me, I prefer to use at least '40' as the local hot and humid weather is unforgiving and the strained engine  needs extra protection from a thicker oil especially for 'stop & go' city driving and when faced with a traffic jam.

Title: Re: what engine oil you using now?

I even heard of some using '20'.

Thinner oil has its advantages in being more fuel economical.

'30' can be used.

It's just a personal preference and driving conditions your car has to go through which you will know better (eg. more city driving or highway driving).

First of all, EO is recommended for 10,000 servicing, so stick to mineral oil for your 5,000 servicing since it free.

Secondly, using different brands, model or viscosity EO will not void any warranty and definitely will not spoil your engine so no worry.

Thirdly, how thin a synthetic oil is still better than mineral oil.

There is no hard fixed rule on most suitable period to change EO, different driver have different driving habit and mileage clocked. Normal will advise you to change around 6 mths or 10,000km whichever come first.

If you used your own EO for your first 10,000km service, your next service will be 20,000km.

Of course if you are cash rich like Bro gho5tss, you can change every 5,000km or evey quarter. It up to you how you wanna treat your car.

The Amsoil that we bought from can't remember his nick, the EO stated 1 year or 24,000 miles not km IIRC.

8k, 10k are all overkills, extended life engine oils has cleaning agent in it. Is suppose to clean itself of contaminants, most of us are using 10K as a guide because the agent says so. BMW (not Singapore) recommended service intervals for cars after 99 is 15000 MILES,
taking into consideration that we do have more start stop, make it 15000 KM which is about 38% shorter in distance will be good enough. But in order to have your warranty intact, it is therefore best to follow agents' recommended service interval. BTW, Daihatsu has service intervals of 15000km in Singapore, STS the only Japanese car agent that is doing extended service interval. You think they are taking a risk, I don't think so, so why is the other agents' service interval so much shorter? I'll let you be the judge.

CustomGolf,

I suppose most cars need to send back for servicing during warranty period, so the more frequent the oil change, the more profit for the agent.

I have a question for you which my colleague was asking me. He drives a 7 year old Suzuki Liana.

He travels only 8,000km a year, and wants to extend his synthetic oil change to every 1 1/2 years (12,000km travelled) instead of an oil change every 1 year or 8,000km travelled.

Is it safe for him to do so? Will it damage his engine?

hi all, just get my eo changed to shell HX7 (understand it's new brand), synthetic eo, 10w40 at RM$95 (at my cousin workshop), and get my engine flush, seem like my FC improved somewhere 20%after that. Not sure if this EO is gd. By the way, he told me can get it change at another 10k instead of 5k for synthetic eo (anyone can share if it's ok for synthetic EO to change at 10k).

There are other things that happen in the engine besides travelling the miles, during combustion, water are formed too and it might find it's way to the engine oil area, so besides mileage, there are other considerations, I wouldn't advise on prolonging the change interval to 1.5years, one year is already very long for oil change. The 24000miles you see on amsoil are typically for USA type of travelling, you might be able to clock 100 to 200 miles a day which is only about 8 months based on 100 mile per day. The other factor that must be taken into consideration is the number of cold start because there are more condensation during the cold starts. Try to stick to a year max or try moving to semi syn which is less costly but make sure that the engine is flushed.

If you have signed up for NPMP, you will get free fasflo fully synthetic engine oil during your 10,000km oil change.

If you have not signed up for NPMP, you will be given mineral engine oil during your 10,000km oil change. You will have to top up if you want them to top up with fasflo fully synthetic engine oil.

hi HumbleCar, maybe u should swap yr car with me (and with Bro Ying & iagree...we will take turn) so that we can help u to speed up the milleage with FOC :D

28k?? should be 2.8k right? you can use amsoil during your 10k servicing as the free servicing only gives mineral oil, need to top up for synthetic oil.

It is 28K.  Milage when I post earlier was 12K (now milage 13K plus).  I got 2 more free servicing (1 under the CNY promotion package when free servicing is up to 20K and another one was from my friend who change nissan car to another brand and he transferred his last servicing under NPMP package to me for a token sum).  Hence, I need to pay only at the third servicing from now.  Hence, next servicing will be at 20K (1st free servicing), another servicing will be at 30K (2nd free servicing).  The third servicing will be at 40K, which I have to pay and which I will bring amsoil oil.  Therefore, it is 28K (40K - 12K).

I have been to Giant Tampines.

Look at the bottles carefully.

These engine oil are manufactured in October 2004.

Are they still safe to use even though they are unopened and sealed?

I see. recommended shelf life of engine oil should be 3 years and below. if expose to heat even lower.

Hi,

what is your FC using carlube? our ride is more suitable on carlube 5w30 or 5w40?
5w30 is more expensive..cant remember the price..

IIRC, carlube TripleR 0W30 is S$66+ at amk hub.

If both at same price, I will pick 0w30 over 5w40.

hey! i don't come here often, but the engine note of my latio sports is starting to get gruff just about 5000km after the previous fasflo oil change at TCM. Reading thru the posts, I think fasflo isn't worth the $$.

Has anyone here tried changing the oil themselves? I feel like changing the oil myself before the next 30,000km servicing. Should be loosening a drain-plug at the bottom and draining and replenishing the oil right?

You will need to change the oil filter too.

The job is easy but need to have a proper way to dispose the waste oil. You will also need a garage or workshop to do the job.

Yup, pls note that it's illegal to anyhow dump engine oil... So if u DIY, pls spare a thought for yr neighbours (coz my wife slipped and fell when she walked thru our MSCP when someone dumped oil into the rubbish bin) and the environment.

I've seen certain people changing the engine oil for their motor bikes either at the MSCP or void deck, as well as doing maintenance.

Those people really inconsiderate making hell lot of noises with their bikes and also dirty the surrounging environment. NEA should also watch out for these people for the pollution.

NEA Call Centre No - 1800 2255632. Key into your mobile.

But remember to call discreetly, as you are in the same neighbourhood and you do not want anything to happen to you or your car.

Do u have a regular workshop u send yr car to? Coz car workshops will have a drum to collect used engine oil which they dispose of regularly and legally. U can dump it there if u know the people in the workshop.

What is your mileage ? If I interpret correctly you just changed to Fastflo now reaching 5000km of the total 10k km before next servicing right ? So why need to change your oil filter then ? Do you know you need the tool for oil filter change ? Just go to workshop and let them do the EO change for you.

Interesting topic ...

join to dropped a little of my comment.

for my current car .. tried to following..

1. From 2nd Servicing to 70K - Mobil 1 0W-40 Gold Bottle (initially 75 per 4 litre until raise to 80+ per 4 litre - petrol kiosk cost 114 now)
Note ... for two of the servicing .. I do not need to buy EO as cumulative using same brand.. I got 1 extra 3.3 to 3.4 litre of EO for 1 servicing. So .. that save me around $150 to 160 in EO for total 2 servicing.

2. From 80K servicing onwards - Amsoil 0W-30.

Experience ... Mobil 1 is smooth .. even till near servicing date .. engine never get too noisy unless wear and tear of timing chain and etc. Very good experience with Mobil 1 minus thicker oil. Note that I have tendency of heavy foot and my mileage tot not the highest in here but typical can still clock 10K in 5 mths time. 60% HW and 40% Urban

Reason for change ... Car old liao .. no need to buy premium... so .. decided to reduce cost and tried Amsoil instead 0W-30 which cost me $60 for 4 quart. (That is around more nearly 20 bucks saving per servicing)

feedback for Amsoil.. pretty good too (Since it is fully sync esther based EO). since it is thinner oil (lower visocity) the pickup is slightly zippier than previous oil. So ... until I fully consume all the left over ... (I still have 1 quart left as previous servicing using 3 bottle + around 1/3 quart of leftover)
I will then decided to see if can try other brand.

:)

Note. ... if really wanna to save $$$ .. stick to same brand until you fully consume it.

As for own oil change .. yup .. it is environmental not friendly to DIY as discharging is a problem unless you keep and deposit it in the workshop for recycling. I use to do that when I riding a bike.. but only does it for 2 times ... feel it is time consuming .. and decided that such $$$ to earn by others while keeping my time free for other and hands also cleaner.

:)

With reference to the blue highlights above, my personal thought is that the older the car, similar or thicker viscosity oil should be used.

And the older the car, the more you should use premium oil to offer better overall protection and clean up the sludge built up in the engine.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
Title: Re: what engine oil you using now?
Post by: Lorddraco on January 08, 2009, 12:51:02 PM
well ... minimum is SAE 30.. Personally.. I feel so long as we keep regular maintenance and not let let the oil degrade to the extend that offer no protection.

For most of the full sync oil in the market, and especially our car is non-high rev engine (i.e temp in the car not as high as those high-rev/turbo-charged, supercharged engine), the EO supposely can last till 20k before it degrade to the extend that offer no protection. Plus the regular change of oil filter to remove much of the impurities in the EO.

note EO supposely protects the piston and engine from wear and tear. Not cleaning the Engine. Most of Sludge supposely happen in the combustion chamber (thats where petrol that offer cleaning and etc comes into play)

thats what I think...

Moreover .. very few people drove car more than 10 years...  :)

Oh .. when I mention premium... I referring to the price. 20 to 30 more ... but I changed at 10k interval so kinda of waste. Moreover.. that does not mean the EO I am currently use is no good. As mention... up to the servicing time... the engine still smooth. with exception that I got the chance to take a look at the color of the oil which I supposely think not too dark colored. means still in good condition to last a few more ks km.

I believe the Mobil1 you mentioned is actually 5W50, thicker oil than those selling at the stations which is 0W40. I might be wrong though.

Haven't you even consider Castrol GTX or EDGE. I used them for quite awhile and find it pretty good. Smooth and maintaining lube properties throughout.

24K mostly benchmarking using non-tropic climate. Our climate too warm to last till then. The most you can drag is 15K. The warm and humid weather will cause the EO's lubrication properties to breakdown faster. On top of that, we have too many start-stop traffic to make the situation worst.

i initially tot EO is change every 10K regardless of brand one

but recently>> i see the Amsoil XL series and SSO series, the bottle say can last 24K leh => appromx 1 year leh...

is this applicable to our country/weather??? or just those western countries?

Yes, you're somehow correct for the 'prefix' portion. 10W, 5W, 0W. All these are the freezing point of the EO. For example, 10W, the EO will 'freeze' up (solidify) at 10

It does help as my previous ride all the while using 10w40 and when switch to 10w30 FC also improves. Nothing was changed in terms of driving style and route.

And since the manual state using lighter oil, just wonder why so many is still using thicker oil.  :confused1:

I think for economies of scale, Tan Chong, like any other agt workshop, chose to use W40 engine oil which is well accepted in general.

For me, I will stick to W40 engine oil due to local hot and humid weather, and the unforgiving stop and go city driving which can cause extreme stress to the engine.
