Actually measure by $ is the same as long as you know how many litre you pumped. You will then take the distance travelled divide by the number of litre. Actually, the light lit up also not very accurate one. Ever encounter that the low fuel light was on, then it went off by itself after a short while (about 2 minutes) while I was on highway. Then on permanent again. Then I top up near my home.
At times when I really want to know the FC for that tank, I will do the following: (though some bro/sis may not like the method and have their own ways)
(1) Top up to the brink. (Do need to note how many litre was pump in.)
(2) Travel any distance (be it 3/4 mark, 1/2 mark/ 1/4 mark or even light on).
(3) Top up to the brink (and take note how many litre pumped in).
(4) Take distance travel divide by total litre pump in item (3) above.
(Reason: Topping up to the brink will give a more accurate measurement on how much petrol is used to travel the distance mentioned in item 92) above.)
To get average FC for a few tanks to be more accurate, then repeat the above for a few tanks. Based on one tank may not be accurate if during that period you happened to be caught in extremely bad jam, did a lot of waiting while engine and air-con on, etc.

Hi guys/gals,
This is my first post. Only attended meet-up once in the dark at Marina South.
Collected car on 8th Dec/2007, initially with 38km on the oddometer when filling up at the petrol station. After nearly 5 months, have reached 13,810km at the 28th top-up yesterday, 1st May/2008, cumulative total of 1025.77 litres, mainly ExxonMobil Red 5000(95 octane), did try Blue 2000(92 octane, but didn't like the feel), never pumped Green 98 or any Octane 98 before.
Therefore, (13810-38)km divide by 1025.77litres= about 13.463km/litre on average. I drive a yellow Latio hatch 4AT with about 60/40 xpressway/city pattern. Topping-up normally auto-stop, set on slowest notch of nozzle; no forced feeding to brim.
Noticed following:
a) auto-stop at full normally has fuel pointer slightly above "F"',
b) reaches 45 to 50km at "F" mark,
c) car reaches about 120km at quarter mark,
d) reaches about 250km at half mark,
e) reaches about 390 to 400km at three quarters mark,
f) reaches about 470 to 480 when fuel light comes on.
Last 2 tanks averaged 14.1km/l(but alot on expressway...say 70%).
Car now on 5W30 fully synthetic engine oil, changed out at 11k servicing.
Used to drive a Jazz which gave 14 to 15+km/l even after 4-1/2 years.
CHEERS!...uncle susa.

My experience is that the light will lit up before it reaches the E mark. After the light lit up, some bros have tried going for more than 100 km more. Myself tested 50 km after light up. Dare not push too far. Scarly caught in a bad traffic jam, then jilat liao.
