Whirring sound when Slowing Down
« on: October 06, 2009, 11:28:25 AM »
Recently I began to notice whenever I slow down, I can hear a very soft whirring sound get lower and lower pitch as the car come to complete stop and it's gone. The sound appears to come from my CVT tranmission, the gear stick area.

Any bros has heard this noise?

Yup, i got this from 5000km onwards... Asked TCM to check during my 5k service. They claim it's the CVT gears making noise... Cannot do anything...  :nonod:

No, it's not normal. If there is any funny sound or noise, that means something is not right. Since your ride is still under warranty, better bring it to TC for check before it leads to bigger or more serious problem/damage (we can never know). Don't play play, CVT is much more expensive than normal auto transmission.

My ride coming to 4 yrs/90,000km liao but don't have such sound, touch wood!

I also experience this whirling down and up sound when travelling low speed slowing down or lightly speeding up, between 10 - 30KM/hr on my 4 AT, this this sound comes on after heavy usage?

Any feedback?

Yes, heard this from my CVT too, a subtle sound like jet engine, also when slowing down, and then the sound stops.
some say its the normal sound of CVT.

I've experience it also in my my cvt ride too. Can hear it clearly after heavy usage and without turning on the radio. Wondering if it is normal for cvt engine... :confused1:

What's your mileage? Mine 47K. The noise is subtle, can hear it if the radio is not loud.

I did a test, when I stepped the brake to slow down, I switch the gear to neutral. The noise is still there..

The way I can describe is more like a small electric motor spinning down...

Another video on CVT..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clqfe8cs1_E

Judging from the above video, CVT seems to provide the convenience of automagtic transmission but with the engine brakes of a manual.

Can those CVT Latio owners comment?

Is it true?

There's the usual fine quiet high pitched whirring and then there is the other lower pitched humming/whirring drone. The first sound has been there since the taking delivery of the car. The latter happened a few months back. TCM changed out the a/c compressor and pulleys. Sound went away...

Finally went down to TCM today with two complaints,

1. Squeaky noise from engine compartment when gear is engaged.
Fix : Renew Exhaust Cones

2.Whirring noise during slowing dwon
Fix: A/C compressor change

Parts
1. Bearing Seal
2. BRG Ball
3. Air Con Compressor.

Also top up of FREON gas..

All no charge as under warranty. First day try out, seems the problems have been eradicated.

I went in with only my complaint without servicing, probably why they have time to change the A/C compressor. My guess is if complaint during servicing, especially a major one, they may be squeezed for time and give you a temporary fixed if it's not too serious.  When I sent in my car at 9am, I got a SMS at around 5pm. So I guess they really took a long time to change the compressor and other fixes.
